Advantages: Russian doll concept, interesting textures, makes baby giggle
Disadvantages: A little awkard to pick up because of the bulk
When I bought my granddaughters Teletubbies phone I also got her a set of Hide-Inside Teletubbies because she adores the Tubbies and I thought this would be a good toy to buy her as a change from the cuddly Tubbies she already has.
Hide-Inside Teletubbies are a modern version of Russian dolls with each Teletubby fitting inside the larger one from little Po all the way up to Tinky Winky. The Tubbies are made of a thick durable plastic and there are no sharp edges or small pieces so children of any age can safely play with them, the recommended age is 6 months plus and I think this is perfect even though my granddaughter was already one year by the time I bought her this set.
My granddaughter enjoys playing with her Hide-Inside Teletubbies and plays with them everyday. As her co-ordination has improved she finds sliding the Tubbies inside each other easier and easier, because they are so bulky and round at the bottom I think it is very simple to put them inside and equally easy for her to join the top and bottom of the Tubbies to close them. The edge where you separate the Tubbies has a wavy pattern and I think this will help to teach young children about co-ordinating their eyes and hands to join the waves and close the Tubby.
The only way my granddaughter can pick up the larger Teletubbies (Tinky Winky and Dipsy) is by holding their antenna because her hands are not big enough to grip the rounded shape of the toys otherwise. This is fine though because the antenna are strong enough that she can hold the toys up and move them around without having to keep putting it down to grip the antenna again. Laa-Laa and Po she can pick up normally although does tend to go for the antenna as I think she finds them more comfortable to hold this way.
The Tubbies themselves are shiny plastic but the Tubbies tummy patch has a speckled rubbery texture that my granddaughter loves stroking because it is a nice contrast to the feel of the body of the Tubbies. The Tubbies also feature small grey feet on the front of the toys and these have a very soft feel which my granddaughter really likes, unfortunately these feet are very small and because they are so soft she tries to stroke her face with them but then gets frustrated when she cannot grip the Tubbies well enough to get this little patch in the right position to rub her cheek with.
Po is the only Tubby which does not open and this is because she is the smallest and there is no other Tubby to fit inside her. Tomy have made a slight adaptation to Po though and have given her a weightier bottom meaning that she wobbles around but does not fall onto her side. If anyone remembers the Weebles you will know what I mean, and my granddaughter loves to push Po from side to side and watch her wobbling. She does get rather annoyed when Po wobbles her way off the table though. Also, because of the weight inside Po she is heavier than the others so if you have a little one who likes to throw things (as we have!) then be careful as Po can give you a nasty clunk on the head!
Hide-Inside Teletubbies are made by Tomy and cost me £7.99 for the full set of four in Woolworths. I have since seen them a couple of pounds cheaper and more expensive depending on where you shop, Ebay have brand new sets selling for around £7 so it might be worth you looking on there before you go to the shop to buy them. I would definitely recommend them for any Teletubbies fan in your family because they look great, are borderline educational and will give your baby hours of fun.
Summary: Where have the Teletubbies gone?
