Tomy Hide 'n' Squeak Eggs
Advantages: Several stages to learning
Disadvantages: Needs an adult to open the box
Despite there being 7 years between my sister's youngest and my twins she very kindly had kept toys that could be handed down one day. One of the toys she passed on to us was these Tomy Hide 'n' Squeak eggs. I was more familiar with Tomy making baby monitors than toys but they certainly came up with a good one in these eggs.
The egg box
The eggs are kept in a bright yellow plastic egg box which is the same size as an average box of eggs. The bright colour quickly attracts itself to little ones. It has a clip fastening on the front which is too stiff for little ones to open by themselves which is a shame. I'm often getting the box given to me with a 'pease' to have them opened which shows how popular they are, the box is never closed with the eggs neatly inside when it's time to tidy up!
The toy comprises of a set of 6 chicks in eggs which come in 3 different colours the set I have are blue, purple and yellow. The chicks are each in their own shell which come apart as you break the egg open.
The coloured chick part stays in the base of the shell and the top half of the shell comes away. This enables baby to put the shells back onto the chicks. The chick can be pushed down slightly into it's shell to make it's squeaker work. This was one of the first things my little ones liked about them, after tipping them out of the box to see them all break apart!
Each chick has a different style of face painted on it, eyes open, glasses, etc. This face is also painted onto the egg shell so your little one can match up the shell with it's chick. My twins aren't at the stage of matching chicks to shells yet but do enjoy taking the shells off and randomly putting them back on again.
Another great aspect to this toy is the shape sorters built into the base of each egg. There are different shapes, square, heart, star, etc about 1/2 cm deep on the bottom of the shell. These slot into the 6 matching shapes in the base of the egg box.
How old to play?
These eggs are suitable from 12 months and the several learning stages help your child to develop.
Price and availability
These eggs are widely available and are currently only £4.67 from Boots. I think this is a great price for a toy that is really popular with my little ones.
Would I recommend?
Yes a good addition to any toddler toy collection.
