Advantages: chunky - easy to turn pages - colourful - well known songs

Disadvantages: price

My youngest son likes anything that makes a noise. When searching for something to buy him last Christmas I found the Vtech Nursery Rhyme book on www.amazon.co.uk. I had seen the book elsewhere but it had been about £15 so I had decided against it because it seemed expensive.

The book is made of hard plastic and has pictures stuck to each page. You turn the pages like a normal book and each page shows a different nursery rhyme. There are six nursery rhymes in total including Ring a ring of roses, Humpty Dumpty, Hey Diddle Diddle, London Bridge, Twinkle, Twinkle and The wheels on the bus. On the spine of the book are two arrow shaped buttons, one red and one green. When the book is open the arrow pointing to the song being sung flashes in time to the tune. The pictures are very bright and colourful and the plastic of each page is also a different colour. There are two big tabs on the middle pages to help little hands turn the pages more easily.

When my son opened this present on Christmas morning he was very pleased with it. He is a November baby and had just turned one. He found the book easy to hold and the pages easy to turn. He liked to press the buttons to make the tunes change and did this quite a lot at first. At that age he didn't really listen to what was being sung or try and join in but he just enjoyed the sounds and the music.

We have had the book almost a year now and it is still in excellent condition. None of the pictures have peeled off and everything is still in one piece. We have had to replace the batteries but this is to be expected. The book takes two AAA batteries and these are held in a secure compartment in the spine of the book. To open the battery compartment you do need a screwdriver to open the top. The speaker is on the bottom of the spine.
I think I paid about £8 for this book which although I felt was a little expensive it is the cheapest that I have seen this type of book. I don't think I would have paid any more for it. The book is well made and strong as you would expect from Vtech and there are no obvious hazards to a young child. I think the recommended age range for this toy is from 12 months but I think a baby from 6 months would enjoy this book. My son is now almost two and he still likes this book very much even if I find it a little irritating after a while.

I would recommend this book to anyone with young children as it is well made and long lasting. I would suggest shopping around to get a good price though.

Summary: a lovely book for babies
