My daughter was bought this for her first birthday just over a year ago. I have had a quick look and it retails for around £12.00. It is a plastic 'book' with six pages each showing a nursery rhyme. It requires 2 AAA batteries; I only changed them for the first time a month ago so they last quite well. There are 2 volume settings, the highest not being too loud and the lowest still audible.
The front of the book has lots of bright colourful pictures of different nursery rhymes. There is a press in button that will sing different rhymes when pushed and on the spine is a light up face that 'sings along'. When the book is opened it says 'it's story time' and the face on the spine has moved around to see you. Each page when opened sings a nursery rhyme, the verse of which is written, a relevant background picture is given and then there is an interactive button relating the rhyme that can be pushed, pulled or twisted to play the music of the rhyme and make appropriate noises. For example the first song is 'Hey Diddle Diddle' so the song is sang when it is opened and then there is a picture button of the cow in the moon that needs to be twisted and it will play the music of the song and then make cow sounds.
My daughter really enjoys this book. Initially she enjoyed sitting with me and I would sing along, point to the pictures and show her how more sounds were given when you used the buttons. As she got older she learnt how to make the buttons work for herself and now it has helped her learn the songs and she sings along at the top of her voice. I think it is good that the song is given and then when the button is pushed the music is played. This gives the child a chance to hear the song and then try to copy it.
When the book is closed it announces 'the end' and that is it switched off until the book is opened or a button is pressed, this helps to preserve the battery life. I am really impressed with the quality of the book, it is made of plastic and nothing has broken or come off even though it has been opened and closed several times. There are also no signs of scratches or wear and tear. The book helps children to learn nursery rhymes, improves hand eye coordination by rewarding them when they can use a button and it also helps them to understand cause and effect.
If I were to buy it, I think I would give this to a child between 1 and 2 to get the most from it as I think it will probably be redundant after the age of about 3. This is an ideal toy to take out with you. It's not very big so easily fits in a bag and can be used to help keep your child amused in the car or when out for dinner.
Summary: A nice gift
