My 7 year old daughter put the VTech Secret Safe Diary on her Christmas list and for the price this is an excellent interactive toy.
The diary is 'voice activated' and you set this up with a special password on first use (the instructions are straightforward and clear) which can be reset again if required. Despite not being foolproof (I could open the diary although my husband couldn't!), it is a great feature and works correctly for my daughter, with clear voice commands to guide you along.
There are lots of activities in the diary to keep your child amused, including make and keeping notes, making calendar entries, taking and editing photos and setting up the clock, date and alarms if required.
There are a number of function keys along the top of the QWERTY keypad, which give access to the different activities and menus on offer. The accompanying voice and background music can be individually turned on and off which is great when you're trying to watch the TV!
We initially read through the instruction leaflet but my daughter very quickly picked up what the diary could do and I found it to be very intuitive and straightforward to use.
The diary comes with a USB cable for connecting to the PC so you can back up photos etc and print off if required.
The price (circa £30) is a great buy and as it is Vtech you can be assured of a quality product (although batteries are required!).
My daughter was bought this electronic "diary" for christmas, and it has actually turned out to be one of her favourite presents! She is 6, and her favourite thing to do is write little notes and draw pictures. This toy seems to appeal to her creativity, and really engaged her interest from first play!
The size of the diary is good - it needs to be held with two hans, but is still very portable compared to laptop-style toys she has previously had. You have to say a word to access the diary, and it then pops open and play starts immediately. The popping open is very appealing to my daughter - she loves it! A chirpy voice accompanied by annoying electronic music greets you, and encourages you to "come on!". The buttons are easy for kids to navigate - there are 6 main menu buttons which are pink and flower shaped. The options are:
* Diary (create one or read previous ones)
Some of these have various options within them, so there is quite a lot to do. My daughter particularly enjoys the word games and the diary function. She has also used the pets one. It is easy for her to understand what to do so a great toy for independent play. Because of the size of the toy, it is great to take out and about e.g. in the car. It seems well made. My only negative points are the annoying music (it goes on and on throughout play - it doesn't seem to bother my daughter but is very unnecessary in my opinion; and the fact that the screen is quite small with a very basic black and white display.
