      Advantages

      Disadvantages

      Well recommended

This was another of the many toys I was given second hand when my daughter was born.

The VTech Spin and Teach top is a spinning top which spins when you press down the red plunger in the middle of it. It makes noises as it is pushed down and then randomly selects one of four modes. The rest of the spinning top is blue and yellow with 4 animals: elephant, lion, bear and monkey; and numbered buttons 1-4. The four modes teach numbers, animals, animal sounds and music. The toy has a sliding switch on it to choose between on and off.

The numbers mode get baby to press the different numbers and hear them spoken. If they touch the animal next to the number it also states the number and then makes the animal noise the correct number of times. The animal mode states the name of the animal when it's pressed.

The animal sounds mode (silly sounds) gives the animal sound when an animal is pressed. It also plays a game and asks where the animal that makes the sound is and cheers if you push the right one. The last mode (my favourite) is a musical mode which plays different styles of music based around each animal's style.

The toy is supposed to be for 6 months and over, but I don't think it is suitable until a lot older. It is quite hard to push the plunger down and that was the bit my daughter liked best. She was happy when I did it for her and she liked pressing the numbers and the animals to hear the noises. She also liked the fact that the numbers lit up.

She's now 14 months and is able to push the plunger on her own. She also loves the music mode and loves to dance to the music while it plays. Unfortunately, the music stops when another button is pressed so it gets interrupted a lot! The toy is also quite heavy so she can't carry it around easily which she likes to do with all her toys.

I don't think you can buy this toy much now but I've seen it selling for around £7 which is a good price for a fun toy.

a spinning toy for children to learn animals and numbers

This toy is great it teaches babies and toddlers animal, animals and colours all in one.
Its brilliant and it gets used all the time. It's good for a young baby as they will enjoy pressing the animals and buttons and an older toddler will enjoy spinning it round all the time.It has 3 different things you can do spin it, hear the animals names and the noises or learn numbers up to 4 and children enjoy trying out all of them untill they get bored. The setting changes automaticaly when it spins around.
I feel the toy is heavy to lift for a very small child and also they need alot of strenth in there hands to press it to get it to spin fast but it does give challenge for an older child.I think the toy needs 2 aa batteries I will need to check this the next time the batteries run out.The toy still spins around even without batteries so the toy is'nt compleatley useless if you have no batteries in the house! but is more interesting with them of course.

        Advantages

        Disadvantages

A nice addition to the toy box

There are many toys on the market today that claim to be educational. It's quite difficult to decide which of them actually are going to help your little one's development, but I have found that Vtech are a reliable manufacturer when it comes to quality robust toys. So, when I saw this advertised for £13 on Amazon, I decided to add it to my son's Christmas list and was pleased when he recieved one.

It is a colourful spinning top, with a plunger on the top, four animal characters and 4 light up buttons with numbers. It has a variety of different sounds, games and songs depending on how many times you spin it. You can then use the buttons on the side, or the animals depending which mode you have selected; for example under the "animals" setting, the toy may ask you to find the bear. When your little one pulls an animal character, it will tell them which animal it is and make the noise, until they find the right one, when it gives a cheer! Give it another spin and it will teach the numbers when they are pressed.

It is always handy to have a volume setting, and this one is easy to find, as it's on the top of the toy. The great thing is that because of the nature of a spinning top, you can switch it off altogether when your nerves are fraught and the child can still play with it. Saying that, the voice and songs aren't too annoying and the accent is british.

In terms of ages, it is probably suited more to older children who can sit up and are quite mobile. The games will go over their head until about 2 and above in my opinion, but below this age, it is fun for them to bash away at the buttons and spin it round. It's very durable and has been slobbered on and thrown down in our house with no ill effects.

Overall, a good toy which they will get a lot of fun out of.

        Advantages

        Disadvantages

good toy that has a lot of use by my son

The spinning top is bright blue red and yellow with four different colour animals an elephant, bear lion and a monkey. It has four flashing lights with numbers one to four. It says phrases like "where is the lion roar?" and plays tunes a saying "spin to the music"

I got this spinning top in a bundle of toys I won off eBay. My son has always loved this. He loves toys with lights and from about 6 months could pull the animals which they then respond with animal noises or songs.
The numbers on the side of the toy flashing which also helped to keep his interest. The bright colours and animals always drew him to this toy. He still at 20 months old cannot really get the top to spin and can get quite frustrate with it but he still loves it. One of the animals now doesn't work but it has had plenty wear and tear and he still plays with it. He is starting to play with it less till he hasn't noticed it for a while then it is like seeing an old friend that he remembers what to do.
I would recommend this toy for boys or girls from the age of six months old.

        Advantages

        Disadvantages

Overall is a great toy to entertain your child.

This is a great VTech toy you can buy the VTech Spin and Teach Top on Ebay for £12.99. It is suited for children over 6 months. The spinning top comes complete with the 2XAA batteries that it needs.

This toy is really good as it has lots of activities for your child to do. Round the edge of the spinning top is numbers 1-4 which when you press light up and say the number. The colours of them are 1-red, 2- purple, 3-orange and 4 is green. This is good as it teaches your child numbers and colours. It also has them using there fine motor skills having to press the buttons.

On the top of the spinning top there is a big red button that they can press down then it goes again. When you do this the spinning top spins round and says a phrase or plays a tune. The most popular phrase is says is 'Animals round and round we go' then it asks for you to spin it again .and it plays a tune.

On top of the main part of the spinning top there is 4 different animals which are the elephant, monkey, bear and lion. When you press them it says a phrase and gets you to find another one. For example when I press the monkey it say 'I am the monkey and makes a monkey noise then says where's the lion'. So then your child will need to look for the lion figure and press that one and it carries on. If you are taking a bit longer to find an animal it plays a tune and says 'Give me another spin' and then lights up.

I think this toy is brilliant as it's very bright and cheerful it is made of hard plastic so won't break if your child presses on the buttons hard. The spinning top will help your child learn animals, numbers, songs, colours and phrases. It will have them looking for different animals so they get involved with the toy. The instructions that it gives you to find the animals are very clear and fun. My daughters loved playing with this when there younger and had hours of fun with it. The tune and phrases do get a bit annoying after a while though.

        Advantages

        Disadvantages

Nice bright noisy toy for little ones.

I bought this for my littlle girl when she was 9 months as she loved spinning tops. It is really brightly coloured and nice and loud although it does have two noise settings if you prefer it a little quieter. It has four settings when you spin the wheel by pressing the plunger and has several different activities within each setting so plenty to keep her occupied. When younger she would sit for ages whating it spin, but know she is older she can interact really well with it and knows all the animals and phrases. It is very robust as it does get chucked and kicked around and i find the batteries have lasted really well and 6 months on still on its original batteries. the animals are sensative to touch so easy for little fingers to activate but the plunger takes a little more work. It only cost me £10 so a good buy for what it does.

        Advantages

        Disadvantages

        Keeps kids entertained

My son received the v-tech spin and teach top for christmas last year when he was 5 months old. It seemed to be a great toy its made of sturdy colerful plastic. It has a red handle in the middle which you use to push down and it makes the toy spin. Round the edges of the top are numbers 1 to 4 these light up as the top goes round. Also on the top are four animals they are a lion, bear, elephant and a monkey. When the top is switched on if you touch these animals thay make sounds and play different tunes. The top requires 2x AA batteries to make it work. When you buy it its already fully assembled. My son really loves this toy and still plays with it a lot even though he is 14 months now. I would reccomend this toy for children of 6 months and above.

        Disadvantages

A popular toy mixing tradition with modern

Having 2 children close together creates nothing but a nightmare when special occasions loom on the horizon and the time comes to go birthday shopping. You know the story, the older child already had the toys and they're still in great condition so why buy them again. This is the dilemma I face when choosing a toy for my little girls birthday, she had plenty of things for when she was a bit older, lots of clothes and books but I wanted to get her a toy, all of her own, that her brother hadn't played with before her. We scoured the shops for days searching out a toy suitable for her age, gender and interests, in the end we settled on this spinning top because she picked it out herself, we gave her a choice of several possible toys and this was the one that she got most excited about.

        Vtech Spin & Teach Top-
The Spin & Teach Top is a brightly coloured, chunky plastic spinning top, suitable for children above the age of 6 months. It is similar to traditional spinning tops working by pressing down on the plunger on the top, as the plunger raises the top spins. Unlike traditional tops this has a flat base so it won’t topple over. The plunger also works as a way of changing the mode on the top, as it is pressed the lights will flash and music will play, the top has 4 settings
"Numbers", "Animals", "Music" and “Wacky sounds"

Around the edge of the top are 4 coloured, numbered buttons which light up when the top is pressed, there is also 4 animal figures a lion, a monkey, a bear and an elephant. When the buttons or animals are pressed they make different sounds depending on the mode the top is in. If for example the top is in animal’s mode then it will make animal sounds, ask you to find the animal etc... If you then press down the plunger it will change to another mode and the buttons will make strange sounds, tell you numbers, play music............

Songs included are "Row Row Your Boat" "ABC" "Dance Of The Sugarplum Fairy" and several other well known nursery rhymes.

The spinning top has 3 volume settings, you change this by using the slide switch on the top. The off setting stops the lights flashing and music playing however it can still spin, then there is volume 1 and 2, with 2 being the loudest.

The spinning top takes 2 AA batteries which are included, the compartment to change them is in the base of the top. It is not recommended that you use rechargeable batteries. The top can still work without batteries although it will only spin. The top also has an automatic shut down feature, when it's not been played with for a while it will shut itself down to preserve the batteries, it will come back on again as soon as a button is pressed.

        Price & Availability-
I purchased my spinning top from Mothercare for £12.99. It is generally available in larger toy stores and it is available online, you can get it direct from the Vtech website also for £12.99.

        My Opinion-
Although my daughter has only had the toy for 6
months it has seen a lot of use and abuse, it is constantly out of the toy box and both my little ones regularly pop back to it to set it off spinning before going back to what they were doing. The plastic seems really durable and has survived the occasional tumble off the sofa or being thrown across the room, it's also been landed on a few times by my ever so clumsy toddlers.

I love the bright colors that have been used, they are really eye catching and attractive to my little ones, my little boy loves to proudly tell me which colour is which and as soon as my daughter can talk i'm sure she'll be the same. The flashing lights are also popular and my little girl likes to press the buttons just so they'll flash.

The size of the plunger means that even the smallest unco-ordinated hands can press down on it but there is no risk of it breaking easily.

The top is great for teaching such things as numbers, animals and colours. It also helps with my little girls’ co-ordination as she tries to start the top spinning or catch the flashing lights. While my little girl is still a bit young yet to understand, my son quickly got the hang of finding the correct animal when the spinning top prompted him. Ok so your little one isn't going to learn quantum physics or long division with this toy but it's a great starter for colours, numbers, animals etc...

From a parents point of view the fact that it can still spin when turned off is a major bonus, while the little ones may love the voices, sounds and music it can on occasion get on mummy’s nerves, so being able to turn off the volume but still have a working toy is great. I have to say I do find the voices a bit annoying and some of the "Wacky sounds" too, I guess I'm just too grumpy in my old age.

Cleaning wise this is really easy to keep clean, just wipe it over with a damp cloth, there aren't too many grooves for gunk to get caught in.

One of the disappointing elements to the top is that it only spins twice when you've used the plunger, if you're really lucky you might get an extra half turn driven by the tops own momentum. You can't even plunge several times to get a good spin like you could on traditional tops. It is also a bit too heavy for my little girl to pick up and carry.

Overall I’d say this is a pretty good toy, my kids love it which is the main thing but I can also find it bearable as you can switch off the volume. £12.99 is a fair price to pay when compared to the prices of a lot of toys nowadays and because it seems popular with both my 1 1/2 and 3 year olds I’d say it has a good life span, not just in terms of not getting broken or worn out but also in terms of them growing a bit older and still enjoying it. My daughter still gets as excited about the toy now as she did on the day she chose it.
