Advantages: Fun, colourful, musical

Disadvantages: Heavy

This was another of the many toys I was given second hand when my daughter was born.

The VTech Spin and Teach top is a spinning top which spins when you press down the red plunger in the middle of it. It makes noises as it is pushed down and then randomly selects one of four modes. The rest of the spinning top is blue and yellow with 4 animals: elephant, lion, bear and monkey; and numbered buttons 1-4. The four modes teach numbers, animals, animal sounds and music. The toy has a sliding switch on it to choose between on and off.

The numbers mode get baby to press the different numbers and hear them spoken. If they touch the animal next to the number it also states the number and then makes the animal noise the correct number of times. The animal mode states the name of the animal when it's pressed.

The animal sounds mode (silly sounds) gives the animal sound when an animal is pressed. It also plays a game and asks where the animal that makes the sound is and cheers if you push the right one. The last mode (my favourite) is a musical mode which plays different styles of music based around each animal's style.

The toy is supposed to be for 6 months and over, but I don't think it is suitable until a lot older. It is quite hard to push the plunger down and that was the bit my daughter liked best. She was happy when I did it for her and she liked pressing the numbers and the animals to hear the noises. She also liked the fact that the numbers lit up.

She's now 14 months and is able to push the plunger on her own. She also loves the music mode and loves to dance to the music while it plays. Unfortunately, the music stops when another button is pressed so it gets interrupted a lot! The toy is also quite heavy so she can't carry it around easily which she likes to do with all her toys.

I don't think you can buy this toy much now but I've seen it selling for around £7 which is a good price for a fun toy.

Summary: Well recommended
