Advantages: its fun
Disadvantages: ?
Teatime toy There are many toy tea sets available some made in plastic some more a porcelain collectors [piece. I have seen a winnie the pooh set in Early learning centre. In fact we have a few of these pieces at school. The cups tea pot milk and sugar bowl have pictures of winnie the pooh on them I think it would appeal to a child .The pieces are quite a good size. They cost about £10/. I think for a child who is pooh mad they would be a good toy . The plastic feels strong and child friendly. The tea set includes 4 cups and saucers a tea pot a milk jug a sugar basin. There are many tea sets available either with pictures of different characters or plain plastic ones. All good for an imaginary tea time. Come and play with me .I have got a tea set for Christmas its just like mummy’s It is made from plastic we will not break it. There sit down on the floor and I will make you a cup of tea look I can put it on a tray a cup for you a cup for me and one for teddy one for dolly, put the cups on the saucers. I have a milk jug, do you take milk. Yes right lets pour some milk in the cups. Now here is the teapot I filled it with water, shhhhhhh mummy doesn’t know she says I make a mess with the water. Let me pour some tea into your cup, oopps not too much it goes onto the tray the cup is too full, lets pour some for teddy now the cups not full it needs some more water, yes that’s better the cup is full now. Do you want some sugar? No it’s too fattening. I have a plastic spoon let me stir dolly’s tea. Shall I help you drink it dolly “splash, oopps I have poured water is all over dolly’s dress”. I have some plates with my tea set, I have got some biscuits on them mummy gave me those. Do have a biscuit say thank you it’s polite, mmm lovely. Lets take a cup of tea to mum, pour the water into the cup, careful carry it to mum. She is washing up “wobble w
obble ahh made it mummy” here’s a tea for you mummy. “Thank you dear”. Now what has your child learnt from playing with his/her tea set? He /she is practicing social skills how to invite someone into the house and offer them a cup of tea how many times have they seen you do that? They are sharing by offering biscuits to a friend or teddy. It’s important to learn how to share. They have learnt how to pour, have learnt about quantities, how much water to pour to fill a cup. Too much, not enough. Lots of skills have been learnt. A tea set can be used to play many different make believe games .A party, a visit from granny, dinner time, a tea set can go on a picnic the options are endless all it needs is some imagination. Some pretend food is a useful extra may be some plastic food bought from the toyshop. Or some salt dough models, anything can be used to represent food on a plate. Tea sets for children usually come in bright colours so can help colour recognition. And colour matching the right cup to the right saucer. A tea set can be used in simple basic maths counting and making sure each teddy has cup learning is more fun if you make a game of it. Basic manipulative skills can be practiced, pouring water into the cup not missing it . A first tea set is easily bought from a toyshop; choose one that is brightly coloured and a fairly hard plastic. Tea sets are fairly cheap in toys are us they range from £6 upwards I would recommend plastic tea sets to play with for a child aged over 2 nearly 3 years old, and I would expect an 8 year old might still play with one depending on the child. Thank you for reading. Have fun playing with your children best wishes Mary
