Advantages: Cute lifelike doll

Disadvantages: cost

I was determined that we were not going to have a Baby Born in our house but my 6 year old daughter had other ideas.

She finally got one for her birthday this year. The doll is quite like lifelike and comes complete with a birth certificate, family tree chart, and details of how the ‘baby’ grew until it was ready to be born. Baby Born is supposed to act like a real baby – you give her water (only from her special Baby Born bottle of course) and she’s then supposed to wet her nappy. However this only works if the doll is in a certain position – believe me you feel like a right twit holding it upside down hoping that it wets soon! The doll can also be fed her special food which then results in her doing a ‘number 2’. Trust me you do not want to know what you have to go through to make this doll poo!

However the main reason I didn’t want Baby Born was not for her lack of personal hygiene but because of the ferocious marketing that accompanies this doll. All the clothes and accessories are very expensive e.g. an ordinary outfit for this doll starts at £9.99, her raincoat and wellies are £19.99 and special Baby Born cot about £50. I have tried to convince my daughter and her friends that Baby Born could wear ordinary clothes/sleep in a normal priced doll’s cot but the marketing people have done such a good job that the kids are convinced that if it doesn’t say Baby Born on it then it’s not good enough for their doll!

So a word of warning to anyone thinking of getting this doll in the future….make sure you have plenty of money for everything that goes with it!!

I came along here after buying a second-hand Baby Born for my daughter, hoping that you might give some insight into how the darn thing works - we have no instructions!

My email addie is on my profile; if you see this comment (I know it's taken me ages to find it!!), I wondered if you would mind mailing me with any instructions.

An d I know exactly what you mean about the cost of accessories! Thankfully, my daughter is still to young and is more than happy to see it wearing her old baby clothes, even if they are a little bit too big!

Fine line, what to buy them - you don't want them to have nothing that their friend's have got, but on the other hand, you don't want them to be a prey to marketing at the age of six! I know how you feel!
