Asda Reduced Fat Soured Cream
Advantages: Low fat and as tasty as a full fat soured cream
Disadvantages: None at all
I love fajitas and one thing I simply have to have with them is soured cream and salsa or they're simply incomplete for me!
However sour cream is hefty on the hips (although delicious!) so the other night in Asda, knowing I was having fajitas that night for my tea I was on a quest to find something not so fattening and I spotted this lower fat version of something I love.
As far as I am aware this product only comes in one size and that is in a tub that holds 300ml of the sour cream. The packaging is white and pink and on the front of the tub there is a photograph of a jacket potato with sour cream over the top of it and we are told that it is Asda 'Fresh', Reduced Fat Soured Cream and that it now contains 50% less fat and is suitable for spooning and cooking though not whipping or pouring and the size is stated. On the back of the tub other information given includes ingredients, allergy advice, a full nutritional information chart is given and contact details for Asda are listed, the lid is see-through and plastic and covers a foil pull off lid under that, that again tells you what it is and the best before date is clearly stamped on there.
The Cream Itself:
Well the cream itself is rather set and glossy with a sour sort of smell to it really and is an off white colour. It isn't too thick though on the tub it says its not suitable for pouring and it isn't so but it's thick enough.
Taste-wise for me, compared to Asdas full fat soured cream there is little or no difference between the two which is the good news to me. It is sour and tangy and only contains milk proteins. What is nice about this is that when it hits warm/hot food it doesn't go to water but holds well and is the perfect meal accompaniment for that reason. Not just for adding to fajitas of course this, try it with chillis and on a potato and I'm sure there are many more combinations too! It's quite simply a high quality soured cream that tastes full fat but isn't and it gets a huge thumbs up from me!
