So part of my new year's resolution was to try and be more healthy in my eating and more adventurous in my cooking/baking endeavours. Suffice it to say that all fired up with this new determination I have been slowly building up my larder with things such as this Smart Price White Self raising Flour. Not one for bothering about whether the product comes in a fancy pack, I spotted this in my local ASDA and thought I'd give it a try for a Bacon and Cheese bread recipe I've been wanting to try out. The flour comes in a green and white Smart Price branded paper bag which is similar packaging to almost all types of flour nowadays. The flour itself is classified as a blend of selected UK wheats with added raising products and is apparently untreated. Ingredients include Wheat flour and raising agents such as sodium bicarbonate and diphosphates. It almost goes without saying but apparently it's a legal requirement in our modern age to point out that this Wheat flour does contain Wheat and therefore is not suitable for those with Wheat allergies. It also contains Gluten so is not suitable for Gluten free diets either, however is suitable for Vegetarians. Open opening you are presented with a fine white flour which has been milled quite well, or appears to be finely milled to my untrained eye. I've used this once so far and must admit that the bread in question that I made didn't rise quite as much as I would have liked. Now I don't know if this is due to my abject failure as a maker of anything food related, my dismal excuse for an oven, or the flour itself so I can't really be too harsh on the product itself. Oh yes and it's important to remember that this flour is supposed to be stored in a cool, dry place and is supposed to be kept away from direct sunlight. I normally find an airtight container works quite well but this is obviously your own choice. Costing only £0.45 for a hefty 1.5Kg bag, this while self raising flour is certainly a no brainer. Available both in-store and on-line, you will be able to get baking in no time at all with this frills free product. I have given the product 4/5 as I am not sure if the recent failure of my baking is directly related to this product or not but I'm simply not able to give it full marks yet. Flour is the kind of ingredient which you always have in the cupboard. I know in our house, we always seem to have a packet of flour and never seem to run out. The other day whilst in Asda, I saw that they had their own brand of flour - selling at around 50p which I thought was an excellent bargain. The flour comes in a paper bag - as do most brands of flour. However, I do not particularly like this packaging as it means that once the bag has been opened then the flour goes everywhere. The flour looks like...well flour. It's white in colour and is powdery as is 'normal flour'. One thing I noticed is that there are some lumps in this flour (as with a lot of flour) - so it's probably a good idea to sieve it before adding it to your cake mixture - unless you want lumpy cakes of course. Once it's sieved it's lovely and fine. I have made a couple of cakes using this flour and to be honest I can't see any difference between this 'cheap' flour and more expensive brands - it has just the same quality. The cakes have been beautiful - lovely and light and fluffy. The flour is self raising and I find that it does a wonderful job of 'raising' the cakes to a perfect height. All in all, I can't see anything wrong with this flour and would definitely recommend it!! You definitely get a lot of flour (and a few cakes) for your 50p. Thanks for reading! As most cake and some other baking recipes call for self raising flour instead of plain flour, it is useful to have a bag or two stored up in your kitchen cupboard for when the time comes that you need some. Besides, it is just not worth the hassle of having to add baking powder or other raising agents. This Asda Smart Price Self Raising Flour is a good choice as it is much cheaper than many competitors on the market and so you could end up saving quite a bit of money on your cake baking. You can get a 1.5kg (that is quite a few cakes!) for only 45p from Asda which I think is brilliant value for money considering how useful it is. As far as I can see or taste there is really no noticeable difference between this and more expensive brands so this is a really good bargain buy. If it is any use, the plain flour version of this from Asda will cost you the same price, so it is even better value for money if you are making cakes instead of having to buy plain flour and then some kind of baking agent. This flour is packaged in a simple paper bag with the 'Asda Smart Price' logo on it. It says 'White Self Raising Flour' clearly on the front so you can distinguish this from the plain flour version of this. It has the main colours of green and white so you can easily tell that it is from the Asda brand. Altogether, not the most attractive flour packaging in the world, but for something as cheap as this my expectations of the aesthetic appeal were not that high, really. Keep this flour away from moisture, as it will easily seep through the paper bag. Keep it somewhere cool and dry like a kitchen cupboard. Small lumps can sometimes form from the powder so it is useful to have a sieve on hand to sort these out but I haven't had much of a problem with this and anyway most of the lumps crumble into fine powder with a vigorous shaking around. As mentioned above, I really cannot tell the difference between this self raising flour and other more expensive branded self raising flour, apart from the very basic packaging. There is really no point paying extra for basically the same product, and this could save you quite a lot of money when you are baking. I would recommend this product as something of a bargain buy with 5 out of 5 dooyoo stars.
*Review originally posted to Ciao Jan 2012 and updated for dooyoo* Smart Price is the basic range of products from Asda. ~Self Raising Flour~ Self raising flour is a regular (and important) ingredient when baking. The Smart Price version is suitable for vegetarians. It is untreated flour which contains various wheats (from the UK) and raising agents ((Sodium Bicarbonate, Diphosphates). This flour is presented in a thick paper bag which is white with a green design so is identifiable as a Smart Price product.. Whilst I doubt this flour will be consumed raw, it is worth noting that 100g of flour contains 331 calories, 1.3g of sugar, 0.2g of saturated fat. Smart Price Self Raising Flour can be purchased from the Asda website or in-store and is located within the baking aisle. A 1.5kg bag of flour costs 45p. Plain flour can also be purchased. ~My Thoughts~ I used to bake with my Gran as a child and she would use only the finest ingredients. There are a few different self raising flours available and to be honest, the only difference I have noticed is the price and packaging. Asda offer an own brand flour at 90p for 1.5kg and the more expensive brands such as Homepride and McDougalls are around £1.50 for 1kg - 1.5kg of flour. I have been buying the Smart Price version for a few years and it was recommended to me by my sister who had used it for a while. I have recently finished my last bag so must purchase another. At 45p, it is an essential and very cheap baking ingredients and normally a staple in my baking cupboard. The packaging is unattractive - it can be folded over to keep the flour fresh or alternatively transferred into your own container. The paper is quite thick and I have only ever had one bursting accident after something pierced the paper accidently! I do a lot of baking and mainly do sponges and cupcakes. Self raising flour can also be used for baking scones and biscuits. The flour itself is an off white colour and appears quite thick and crumbly within the paper bag. When the bag is full, it is heavy and difficult to hold. This does mean that a little mess is due to occur when measuring out the flour onto my scales. It can be spooned out easily and because the flour is quite thick, there isn't a lot of dust created. The flour doesn't have much scent. One thing that I have noticed about this flour (compared to the more expensive flour) is that it isn't as fine. If I were to throw it in a bowl the way it comes out the bag, it wouldn't be very good. It takes a minute or so to sieve the flour and once sieved, the flour turns quite fine. My usual cupcake recipe requires me to cream my sugar and butter first then add a spoonful of flour alongside an egg and repeat this. I need 4oz of flour for 10 cupcakes. I then use a metal spoon to turn the flour into the mixture and it blends very well without leaving clumps behind. It blends well with the other ingredients and gives the cake mix a thick, smooth consistency. My cakes rise perfectly in the oven often forming a sponge peak at the top. They come out golden brown and light and fluffy inside - sort of airy. They taste lovely and there flour cannot be tasted when eating my cupcakes. The cakes do not taste any different from when I have used more expensive flours. I can even lick the bowl (a childhood habit) and the mix is creamy and light without a flour taste. Other baking activities require you to flour a surface. Whilst this flour is good for this purpose, I would recommend sieving it first and putting it into one of those shaker bottles to make it a lot easier to dust the surface rather than cover it! ~Conclusion~ This flour is very cheap and exceptional value for money. I wish I had started using it sooner! It has a good shelf life (about a year I think) and one bag lasts for several baking sessions so I can highly recommend it. I don't understand why anyone would pay more (except if they were professional and didn't want their customers to notice them buying cheap ingredients). My wee granny didn't notice a different taste when I presented her with my Smart Price floured cupcakes recently. Overall highly recommended! This flour was previously priced at 52p so has actually gone down in price in the last 18 months. I still recommend it.
