“ Brand: Opies / Type: Cherries „
One thing I like to get in around Christmas is a bottle of martini and of course I think that you can't beat that mixed with some premium quality lemonade and a cherry or two in a nice swanky glass!
I spotted a jar of these in my local Asda store costing about 79p a jar and decided I 'needed' them!
The Packaging of these is simple. You get 225g of cherries in a glass see-through jar and it has a black and gold twist on/off lid to the top of it which has a safety button feature on it so that if it is opened or tampered with the button pops out to let you know. On the front of the label which is black and cream in colour we are told that they are Opies 'A family buisness since 1880', Cocktail Cherries, Maraschino Flavour and the weight is clearly stated. On the back of the jar other information stated includes ingredients and nutritional information and contact details for Opie Ltd is given. Nice enough jar, easy to open and close etc.
What you get is lots of plump, bright red and rather large looking cherries in a water and sugar water that goes a little murky in its colour over time cos of the cherry skin staining it slightly. When you bite into the cherries they are succulent and not rubbery, fleshy and sweet inside and unmistakably cherries in every single way!
I love these great quality, plump and juicy cherries the problem is I'd rather sit and eat them out of the jar with a teaspoon than pop them into a drink! Yes they are rather sweet but added to a cocktail or drink or something like that add to flavours. I think these are simply a fab buy and you get plenty of them too!
Available in all good supermarkets etc!
Opies Cocktail Cherries....
I have a little bit of an ice cream addiction and I find there is no better accompaniment to ice cream other than these Opies Cocktail Cherries in a wonderful Maraschino Syrup. I make sure that I always have a jar of these in the fridge (as once opened they need to be refrigerated) although a small jar never lasts too long with me!
The cherries can be found in most supermarkets although at times when i'm in a different shop, locating them can be tricky. Morrison's have them in the pickles and sauces section where as Tesco's have them with the drink accessories.
There are two sized jars available but I only ever get the smaller of the two as this fits into the door of the fridge nicely. The jar has 225 grams in it and usually costs me around the £1.20 pence region.
The jar states that Opies is a family business and has been running since 1880 which leads one to believe that the produce should be of a high quality (which I find it always is). There doesn't appear to ever be much in the way of competition for these though and I always get this make as these are the only jars on the shelves!
The jar they come in is a nice glass one which makes recycling easy and keeps the cherries well. The cherries themselves are bright red in colour and immersed within a maraschino clear type syrup which I will often pour over a bowl full of ice cream as this has got to be one of the best flavours around.
The cherries can be used for a multitude of different things although like I said before having them with my ice cream has got to be the best choice for me (and if Jack is lucky I may pop one on top of his cone!). They of course are good for popping on the end of a cocktail stick and decorating a cocktail with (if your feeling fancy) or I may well add them into Himself's favourite dessert, a trifle, if I need to win him round for some reason or another.
The taste of the cherries is very nice indeed and this is probably due to the fact that they are in the maraschino syrup. They are sweet and almond like in taste but have kept a nice crunchy texture that is ever so appealing. They sit nicely on a squirt of whipped cream too but this was only tried once when I felt the trifle wasn't enough to win Himself over so literally did myself up as a trifle which worked wonders to getting my own way!
All in all I cannot rate these Opies Cocktail Cherries highly enough. They are versatile, cheap and tasty and perfect for the fridge! I think a score of 5 stars out of 5 and an exceptionally high recommendation is in order and I believe himself would agree!
Many thanks for taking the time to read.
I do hope that this has been of some help/interest to you.
