Wicked Orange Segments At A Wicked Price

I needed some tinned mandarins for a cheesecake I was making over Xmas and someone recommended I buy these from Sainsburys Basics. Just so you know Sainsburys don't do a Broken Mandarin Segments in juice as Dooyoo have listed the category, these I brought came in a light syrup which is also what is says in the picture of the tin above if you look close.

The segments are not stupidly broken, at the bottom of the tin there are a few that have been mushed up but you can easily fish out the ones that look better. I didn't actually use these segments for my cheesecake because they do look a bit crap but they taste yummy so I'll deffo be buying them again for a snack.

The segments are a good size and have had all the skin and everything removed, they taste proper fresh and have got a lovely soft texture that makes them feel even juicier than they actually are.

They've all got a gorgeous orange taste, it's weird to explain but they taste like good quality tinned oranges instead of fresh oranges. If they looked a bit smarter I'd deffo have used them on the cheesecake because they've got such a yummy sweet flavour and it's a shame they look a bit mad.

The syrup is definately light and I reckon it tastes a bit like juice, it's lovely and sweet and I deffo enjoyed swigging it out of the tin!

For 25p for a 300g tin you can't moan, there was shedloads of orange segments in it so don't worry it's going to be all juice because it's not.

        Advantages

        Disadvantages

A great purchase, I love them!

Being on a bit of a healthy eating kick at the moment whenever I'm hungry I'm grabbing at bits of fruits but it's getting silly because I'm forever running out of healthy snacks! So I decided to stock up on some healthy canned fruit so I could stop going so hungry! I like tinned fruit with low fat yogurt and stuff like that as a healthy option occasionally!

        The Packaging....

Silver can with a white and orange label on it and on the front of that I'm told it is Sainsbury's 'Basics' Broken Mandarin Segments In Fruit Juice 'A little more segmented' and then I'm told they contain no added sugar, an at a glance nutritional chart is on there and I'm told that half a can actually contains one portion of your 5 day! On the back of the can ingredients are listed as are storage details, nutritional information is given and I'm told the fruit is suitable for Vegetarians, Vegans & Coeliacs, I'm given a serving suggestion 'Combine mandarins with whipped cream and melted chocolate for a simple mousse', the size is stated (298g) the best before date is stamped on and finally there is a bar-code on there. Simple packaging and it does look economy but really the only thing that is missing really in my opinion is a ring-pull! I'd like one of those!

        The Fruit....

These are really, really tasty! Lots of bright orange mandarin segments (and pieces of mandarins rather than whole segments) in lots of murky looking orangy coloured juice which is actually just pure fruit juice and is rather thin in consistency.

Like I just said some of the segments are whole, plump and perfectly formed but the majority of these segments are little pieces cos they're broken. Taste wise, well they are naturally orangy, zesty, naturally sweet and really rather very tasty indeed. However on some pieces of the mandarins there is a little bit of white pith that seems to have not been removed properly giving a little bit of bitterness to some of the fruit, however this is a minor niggle.

The juice is plentiful with some of the fruit chipping off into it and again it's naturally sweet and tasty with a little tartness to it!

        Overall....

If you care what fruit looks like then this isn't for you. If you want this for decorating things (I.E Cheesecake) then I wouldn't bother really because then you'll be having to really wade through the can looking for decent segments! However if you don't care about that and want to add fruit to a food or fancy just blobbing some ice-cream or yogurt on or something like that then these are really delicious! I think these are a truly excellent buy! Tasty and plump, zesty and a great way of eating 2 portions of fruit a day with east!
