Advantages: Good value for money
Disadvantages: Added oil
I eat as healthily as possible, which is funner than it sounds as there are so many recipes out there that are really tasty as well as healthy and nutritious. Raisins are something i've recently started to purchase regulary as they're healthy as well as tasty and are really versatile; they're lovely on salads, in smoothies, on their own, mixed with nuts or with yoghurt - the possiblities are endless and for those of you who enjoy baking i'm sure they'd come in handy for that too.
I am not brand loyal with raisins and usually purchase any that are cheap or on offer and the Tesco's own brand of raisins have been a regular in my shopping basket for the past couple of weeks as they are sensibly priced at just £1.54 for a generously sized 500 gram bag - great value in my opinion especially as a bag lasts for so long! The raisins come in a sealed plastic bag which has a green colourscheme. It has a clear little window on the front so the raisins can be seen through the pack and the branding etc is basic yet not too bland or ugly. The nutritional information is listed at the very bottom along with additional basic information on the back of the packet.
To open the packet I did need to cut it open meaning it can be a little bit of a pain because obviously raisins can go quite hard and dry when not kept sealed and fresh, but I solve this by just transferring them into a plastic re-sealable food storage box. The raisins are usually quite stuck together in the pack and have quite a dry yet slightly greasy feel to them. I think the greasiness is because there's vegetable oil in the ingredients, but it's not off-puttingly greasy and I can not taste the oil. Physically they're small, black and round, they vary in size but none are very big. They are seedless so there's no worry that i'll hurt my teeth etc although even though they're seedless they do still have a mild gritty taste, which I found a little strange.
Raisins for anyone who doesn't know are dried grapes which contain antioxidants. They are low in sodium and haven't got any cholesterol in them. These raisins are really nice and juicy and very sweet, they're lovely and soft and easy to chew. They're very moreish which is a downside as they're quite high in sugar, although to be fair it is naturally occuring sugar rather than refined/unnatural sugar. Calorie wise, 100 grams contain 295 calories. I have a small handful per serving and have one serving a day. My serving is usually 30 grams (ish) which gives me a lovely satisfying amount of sweetness while not going overboard. I usually have a handful with some natural yoghurt and it's really filling, and there are lots of other meals/recipes that raisins go nicely with. Alternatively I just have them on their own as a healthy snack - if you graze on food then these are ideal!
Overall I reccomend this brand of raisins as it's good value for money and the raisins are tasty and good quality. The only down side is that there's vegetable oil added which I thought was a little weird/not needed, but apart from that I can not really fault the Tesco californian seedless raisins.
