Advantages: Sweet, retro and cheap!
Disadvantages: Go hard easily and too many is not good!
These are my secret sugar-fix sweets. Every time I go shopping around Tesco on my own I tend to pick up a bag of these. That said, they aren't available in every store - so far I have only seen them in the larger Tesco stores - they're not so commonly on the shelves of the smaller stores. So, to business.
I paid 32p for a nice sized bag that was packed full of those kind of foam bananas, strawberries and oranges that I remember buying at the fair when I used to go. I loved the candy bananas and that little retro pull was what initially made me buy them.
I'm glad I did. The quality does vary between the batches though. I have bought bags where the sweets themselves were as hard as toffee - really tough to bite through. But then, I've bought bags where the sweets were as soft and foamy as I remember them. The banana ones are the nicest in my view, followed by the strawberry and then the orange, but that is purely personal taste.
On the times when you get a good bag (which is more often than not, all things considered) you get a nice soft taste of the flavour and it's a bit like eating an Instant Whip kind of dessert in a foamy sweet form. I'm typing this with a bag next to me for a bit of a pick me up, I have to say. And it doesn't take very many to satisfy the craving for some sugar as after the fourth or fifth sweet you'll not want any more for a little while. Which, for me, makes it very good value to give me a boost without breaking the bank by going to buy a chocolate bar or something.
The packaging is the standard red and white found all over the Value range, printed with the Tesco logo in blue. I do tend to remove the packaging and put the sweets into a plastic tub as the plastic tends to split quite easily. If left out with the air able to get to them the sweets will go hard.
Overall, I love these sweets. I find them extremely good value for what they are - an unpretentious sugar-fix with some good retro value.
