Nationwide Building Society ... has completly gone down hill, since it took over Portman. I have bank with them for over 20 years, never had a problem until this year. The staff are rude, when you call at the customer service centre, and loyaty does not count for anything in Nationwide. We are feeling the credit crunch, and we have tried to cliam back our bank charges, which we have quite alot this year,( but never had any before), with help from the gmtv martin lewis website and letters, Nationwide s answer is, he is just a journelist, what does he know!!!!!!!! and if you want to take your accounts to another bank then do so. Alliance & Leicester ... am furious with Alliance & Leicester. I had a current account with them which I wasn t using and which caused me to incur under-usage fees of GBP5 a month. I was aware of the charge and I accept the fact they were within their rights to levy it. HOWEVER I have since tried now on TWO occasions to close my account and both times was assured my account was shut and there would be no further charges to pay. To my horror, I have discovered that my account is still open and I am still being charged - not only under-usage fees but unauthorised overdraft fees. My current account clearly shows where it was reduced to zero at the point where I transferred the money out of the... I do the majority of my banking via the internet. I registered with them soon after it was set up. The website is really ease to use. You start off by entering your unique number whihc is your date of birth followed by a 4 digitis number. You then enter 3 letter from your memorable word and 3 numbers from your memorable number.
