 Abbey National Bank

Abbey National

Newest Review: ... which sent it to them has provided me with a copy of their cheque, made out to "Abbey National plc Re: [My Name]", which was cashed in June 2008. I've been through the usual channels - the useless "Customer Service" department, the obstructive Complaints department and the Ombudsman. More than four months after bringing the matter to Abbey's attention, I'm no further forward, and still £3,500 down. Basically, Abbey don't give a stuff. Your money would be safer under the doormat. I tried to award zero stars, but this website insists on at least one. So they've got one. Under extreme protest. http://www.blog.co.uk... more

Had some fraud on my account (over the phone - the telephone banking security is very poor). They were supposed to open a new account, transfer everthing over and close the old account, but it took over 12 weeks, tens of phone calls and visits to branch to sort it out. I didn't have normal access to my money for that entire time.
The telephone service is appalling - I don't usually use it, but had to because of the fraud. Too many departments, no one knows what's going on or who you need to talk to. They ignored my complaints until I threatened to report them to the ombudsman.
The internet banking service is also clunky and seems out-dated.
I am shutting all accounts I hold with them to move to a more secure & organised bank. I would definitely not recommend to others.

Worst bank in Europe (182 words)

I've been battling to be treated as a human being by this disgraceful excuse for a bank since June 2009, when it came to my attention that they had 'mislaid' a £3,500 ISA I'd been stupid enough to transfer-in in April 2008. To this day (in so far as I can get any response from them at all), they maintain that they never received the transfer - even though the building society which sent it to them has provided me with a copy of their cheque, made out to "Abbey National plc Re: [My Name]", which was cashed in June 2008. I've been through the usual channels - the useless "Customer Service" department, the obstructive Complaints department and the ...  Read the complete review

Abbey National: Unbelievable incompetence (301 words)

I've been an Abbey mortgage holder for the last 3 years. The mortgage is interest only, so I am obviously keen to pay off lump sums as often as possible. When I wanted to transfer some funds from Germany, I was told that this is easy, all I needed was an IBAN number, which was supplied. However when the transfered the money, it was sent back by the Abbey with no comment, just less a lot of fees. After many inquiries into this, I was told that you can't just do this (ANY other English or European bank does it this way) and had to go down a very bizarre route of various transfers to various banks. Very dubious.... Anyway, I tried another transfer, this time ...  Read the complete review

Oh dear. Oh dear oh dear oh dear. I'm glad to see I'm not alone. I've been a customer with Abbey for many years now. My father has been with them for years and never had any problems, so I decided to open my main account with them also. I too, for years, had no problems. Until the past few months. To make a long story short, there had been some fraudulent activity on my account. I've never been fantastic with money, but even I knew that a week after getting paid my card should not have been refused! So on inspection I discovered that cheques - cheques I had not written myself and weren't out of my current book - had been cashed and over £350 ...  Read the complete review

I've been an Abbey customer for over 25 years and over the last 2 years their customer service and their ability to understand what the customer is actually asking for has plummeted. The most recent example: I got married and surprisingly I wanted to change my name. 3 letters and countless ID's going back and forth and I now have 3 cards plus 3 different pin numbers - no idea what for - that are for the wrong type of account instead of just 2 debit cards. How hard can it be? I then try to call them and for each number I try I have to listen to an announcement about them changing their name and then discover through a process of elimination (trying to actually talk to someone) that they don't open on a Sunday. Bye bye Abbey thank you for nothing.
