I recently moved accounts to the Abbey. They promised a seamless transfer, but failed to deliver. Numerous direct debits didn't transfer for months, my mortgage went unpaid, they refused to pay charges incurred as a result (although their advertising promises this). They misrepresented their account set up - transfers between Abbey accounts were not instaneous as promised but took days. Their call centre service is appalling - the call centres are largely abroad and there are language differedifficulties. They also take ages to answer the phone and often keep you on hold for ages. Moving money from one account to another often takes 15 to 20 minutes. To anyone thinking of joining the Abbey - don't.
