Advantages: 6.25% INTEREST Rate
Disadvantages: None in particular
Abbey National used to be a British bank, but it has been bough by the Spanish Finance institution Banco Santander.
For those who use Abbey National, the impact of the acquisition is not visible, Abbey is still doing business as usual, as before the acquisition.
In the past Abbey built a reputation for being one of the most aggressive providers of mortgages. I never got one with them, but they were constantly on top of the leagues. I have a friend who has a mortgage with them at a very good rate (until it comes to refix it!)
I have a saving account with them and have recently moved everything into their esaver, which offers a very good rate of 6.25% interest per year. I have used their telephone service for 2 years and despite being aware that many people have found Abbey National a nightmare, at least n my experience they have always been very professional and helpful. Off course some time you find a person who is not as good as the previous ones, but I am sure that I would be happy to receive the same level of service I received in the past.
I do not have my salary paid into my account with Abbey and also see them more as a provider of long term savings, I also have my Isa with them, again, based on their excellent rates. If you have some money aside and want to get a good return on them with no risks, you may do worse than not contacting Abbey National. However, since no bank is sure these days, try not to put more than 35,000 Pounds in it, so that you are covered by the Government if they fold!
