Disadvantages: High charges, lack of customer service, terrible bank

Abbey have gone from bad to worse on all fronts. This is especially true since they became part of the Santander Group.

I am going to start off with a worrying fact (not sure if the situation has now improved, but here goes). If you have an Abbey credit card and try to transfer the balance to a better deal, some credit card companies will not accept it, stating that Abbey are now a foreign holding bank. This is apauling, it has been reported on elsewhere, so not my personal experience.

On a personal front, just going a few pence overdrawn resulted in four direct debits being refused, then they were repesented, so eight, yes eight charges of £30. They think they can get away with it. When you try and reclaim, they just state that they are allowed to log your complaint and wait until the outcome of the bank charges case is decided.

They also blocked my debit card once, no reason, but left me without access to fund for two weeks. They even tried to say they could not re-issue the same type of multi-function card that I previously had.

They lost my trust, my business and I will always recommend that people avoid them. Try someone like the co-op instead.

Note: Only gave one star because this is the minimum, they deserve zero.

Summary: Avoid this bank, they are no longer a UK concern in my eyes
