Advantages: None that I can really see
Disadvantages: All of the below
I have been a customer of abbey national for about 10yrs. And I would not recommend they to anyone else. I have found that Abbey National do not really care about you as a customer. The reasons being 1) All they want you to use the branch for is to pay money in and draw out. Everything else has to be done via telephone or internet banking. The example that I have is that I wanted to drop my overdraft limit down. You must use telephone banking to do that. We do not do that here. 2) They rip you off. Even if you have a current account with them. If you try and pay any other bill than their own credit card they charge you £5. What a rip off. What I do is pay my bills in HSBC as I have joint account with my husband through them. And they do not charge a penny. One other tip is that if you can pay any bill though the companies own bank. So if they have Natwest you can pay it in Natwest no charge. Can be a pain but can save you money. 3) When I transferred my house over to someone else. I had the mortgage with Abbey National. (Long story and not one to go in to here)They where told when it was a to be done by a certain date. I had to go and talk to advisor at Abbey National after the agreed date. And she went and kicked them in to action. That is the only good thing that I can about Abbey National was their customer advisor. As I no longer use that branch the service has got worse. 4) Their accounts are not always the best in terms of interest. I have been on a binge of tidy up my finances. I went to their web pages to check my instant savers account. And they where paying half a % in interest. I knew it was not very high. But I have never had anything from they saying how much. Needless to say that I am now searching for an instant account with better interest now. Over all I give Abbey National the thumbs down. And if it was really easy to switch current accounts I would have done it by now.
