Advantages: Friendly laid back approach to banking, Convenient
Disadvantages: They keep giving me a bigger overdraft!
After a disastrous 10 year relationship with Lloyds (they denied all knowledge of an appointment I kept with an account manager who obvioulsy failed to take and keep notes of items agreed and cost me a fortune into the bargain) it was time to look for a new bank. My next-door neighbour just happens to work for Abbey National and suggested (he would!) that we open with them. I started off with an Instantplus account,.....because Lloyds had been such s**ts and it was likely my credit scoring was bad......where you don't get a cheque book, just an ATM card with limited use as a debit card (electron). I behaved myself for 6 months (not that I didn't before)and now I have a fully functional bank account, cheque book, atm and debit card and an overdraft facility and no hassle. Of course there are charges and the best bit about those (is there one) is that if its for example a bounced direct debit, they do not debit your account straight away they inform you when it will be done and its usually at the end of the following month. Their telephone banking system is a bit impersonal but friendly with it. Its easy to use whether you use the automated options or speak with an operator. I have recently started banking online and although the site is a little slow I experienced no problems there and every request/transaction is dealt with as if you were face to face with a teller (except in Lloyds bank where they deny ever seeing you). I would also highly recommend Abbey National Insurance Services. I pay 33 a month for home and contents cover, thats a 4 storey inner city town house, with a rebuild value of £175.000. Every claim I have made on the policy from a stolen bike to storm damage has been dealt with swiftly and to my satisfaction. My bike was pinched on a Thursday night and I had a new one delivered first thing the following Friday. Get the Abbey Habit, its good for
you!
