Advantages: Efficient, many outlets
Disadvantages: Not many
It can be a big decision to make to decide which lender is the best for your mortgage, or even which bank or building society is best for your money. Over a number of years it can make HUGE difference. However with so many different banks and building societies the choice is not easy. Then of course there are a whole number of different accounts to choose from. Another factor to choose from is the level of service. So how well does the Abbey National compare. I recently changed my mortgage from the Abbey because there were some good deals on offer elsewhere, but was it such a good move. Afterwards I had a good look at what the Abbey really had to offer and it surprised me that the service they offer is really quite good. As far as mortgages were concerned I have not had any problems with the administration. Over the many years the largest mistake they made was a slight spelling error in my address. Although I managed to get a better deal with my new lender I had considerably more problems with them. The deals you can get vary from time to time so if you can get a good one from the Abbey, then you should not have any problems in my experience. As far as saving with them, they may not offer the very highest rates, but they certainly seem to offer some attractive rates with their machine only or e-banking accounts. Unfortunately for those who like undertaking their business at the counter, the rates are not nearly so good, but most banking organisations are going this way these days. I believe we should not offer financial advice as such so check out for yourself their Direct Saver rates and also those offered for their ISAs. The other advantage is the number of machines. There are four within fairly easy reach of where I live. The major problem is that you can only deposit cheques etc at machines outside their branches. Those at garages and supermarkets allow you to withdraw money and organise your accounts -
transferring money from one account to another, getting statements etc. The other advantage I have found is that it is possible to link accounts and they are so easy to operate. Very little of the bureaucracy found in some banks. So I give the Abbey my vote. I have been pleased with them and would certainly move my mortgage back there if the rates were good.
