Alliance & Leicester are Bank Robber in the true sense of the word!
I wrote to A&L to cancel a standing order and close my current account. They ignored my letter and paid the standing order. This took my account £1.42 overdrawn.
When the statement arrived it informed me of a charge of £20.00 - 4 days overdrawn at £5.00 a day. My next move although they had plenty of time to action my request was to appreciate they may not have had time to deal with my letter so I paid £21.42 into the account thinking I would get the £20.00 refunded. I emailed and again asked for the account to be closed. It took them 7 days @ £5.00 a day to answer. They promise to answer in 24 hours?
The responce 7 days later:

I was sorry to hear of the difficulties which you have been experiencing however, in order to resolve this matter you will need to contact your account servicing team on 0844 800 9000.
So I telephone them at 5p a minute, waited in limbo for 10 minutes. The customer service operator then informs me it is their word against mine that I ever sent the letter that not only will they not refund me the £20.00 I must pay a further £60.00 to close the account and if I dont pay it straight away they will continue to charge me for being overdrawn at £5.00 a day!
Daylight robbery! £1.42 overdrawn & £80.00 charges because of their incompetance. I am furious I have sent a second complaint email tonight and if this gets me no where which I suspect will be the case. Tomorrow night I will pay the £60.00 and report them to the finance ombudsman and reclaim the money through the small claims court.
DO NOT OPEN AN ACCOUNT WITH THIS COMPANY...IF YOU HAVE AN ACCOUNT WITH THEM CLOSE IT AND MOVE TO A REPUTABLE COMPANY!
Summary: They deny getting post! They charge you for their admin incompetance!
