Advantages: Free £100 (conditions apply)
Disadvantages: Having to remember another pin!
Alliance & Leicester are doing a really good deal if you switch your current account with them (Premier Current Account). They offer a service where by they do all the leg work in changing all your direct debits, standing orders and can also write to your employer and close your other current account you are switching from. Even better is if you ask them to do this service for you which is free they put £100 in to your account!! Only thing is that it takes 4 months to process.
Some other benefits include free annual multi-trip European travel insurance worth £60 which is handy to have.
Something else handy to know is that if you go over your overdraft and it is under £10 then you will not have to pay a charge to review the amount of overdraft you have and rather you will pay a fee of £5 per day that you are over. Which I think is reasonable as nine times out of ten for me it is only a £1 that I go over by and end up incurring ridiculous charges even though I check my bank daily and if I go over I immediately transfer!
Comments after using this service - They seem to send you a letter each day whilst processing the change over which is quite frustrating but i suppose helpfull in knowing they're working! all my S/orders and DDR's came out on my new account all fine and had no trouble with the change over at all. So far so good....still awaiting my £100 but it'll be 4 months end of this month so we shall see...
Summary: If you have no dedication to your bank then switch!

- 08/01/09 I cant disagree with your comments regarding the deals they offer - thats why I left NatWest after 15 years of trouble free banking to join A&L. But, in simple terms, the service offered by A&L is abysmal, it borders on incompetent.
There customer service staff are aggressive to the point of being abusive, it takes months to get anything done (8 months for them to change my address, 6 weeks for a new cheque book, the same for a replacement card), the call and branch queues are ridiculous, they do not respond to correspondence - I have so far raised 3 written complaints and have had the courtesy of exactly 0 replies or acknowledgements (which is in breach of FSA regulations), and as they are not a clearing bank, it takes them a longer to clear a cheque than any other bank - 7 working days is not unusual in my experience.
Th ey may offer good deals on new accounts but the service negates any positive points and then some. If your happy with your current bank on NO account consider moving to A&L simply because of the deal. It's not worth it, I speak with the benefit of a long and painful experience.
Mo ving my money to them has been one of the worst things I have ever done. |

- 07/01/09 OK I agree with you in that it is more factual than experience however, I feel that regular readers of Dooyou who would change their accounts as they don't feel tied to their banks, but haven't and aren't looking to and therefore would not perhaps spot this deal would find it useful especially about making £100 just for changing banks. This was my motive behind this review. |

- 07/01/09 Factualy correct about a new account but rather scant on opinion and experience to be really useful to consumers.
I think it's important to remember that dooyoo fills in the gaps that are left by traditional sites. We can get the facts of accounts from all sorts of places but what we can't find on the banking sites is customer experience. |
