Advantages: good range of services

Disadvantages: no flexability

A friend of mine moved here from Jordan and has a work permit as an Internet Developer on a salary of £18k and had a credit card with HSBC in Jordan. When he moved here and started work he apploied on my recommendation to open a current account, no credit facilities were asked for or applied for. However he was turned down as he did not have a utility bill for my address where he is living, as stated earlier I had recommended him and had proved his residence at my address by letters sent here and the registration made by the police for immigration purposes, but this was not enough. They were rude and offhand with him on the phone when he asked what he could do and gave eroneous reasons as to the non opening of the account. I was informed that they do not open accounts for people who have just arrived here. I asked for a written copy of this policy and they refused. So what cann yuou do . I closed my account and moved my mortgage which my father is now doing as well due to their outrageous way of dealing with someone who has come here to help the economy with his expertise. Thankfully the First Trust bank in Northern Ireland where I live had no such problems and I would recommend them anytime.

I think the main point I am trying to make is that they were very rude and unhelpful. I understand about the money laundering aspect however when you have a form signed by the police, a job specific work permit, a referee who has been with the bank for 10 years and another bank have no issues with the proof given, I was also made aware that this is the A&L policy unwritten to refuse anyone from outside the UK until they have been here 3 years.

I've rated SU because you do only deal with one particular aspect of the Bank's operations.
The Bank has to comply with the anti-money laundering legislation and this will be the reason why they wanted the utility bill. It's no excuse, though, for rude behaviour.

Have rated SU as this is so specific and doesn't tell us anything about the company in general.
I am not surprised by this, as most banks as for bills etc as proof of address before allowing people to open an account.
