I had never really heard much about Alliance and Leicester. It was never one of the prominent banks that stood out for me, I guess that was due to advertising and because there don't seem to be many in high streets near me. I recently changed my banking to Alliance and Leicester after spotting an offer on www.moneysavingexpert.com whereby you get ... Read the complete review

I am not a fan of Alliance and Leicester. My main reasons for this are: -When going £3 over drawn I was instantly charged £50, no letter to let me know, no phonecall, I would not have known unless I had phoned them to enquire to my balance. -They upped my interest rate for my allowed overdraft without telling me, when I first ... Reasonable service when working but be aware that paid in cheques take an age to clear so, although you get banking without any actual charges, they get their money by holding on to your cash. Also the website support is pitiful (to be kind) - I guess they save money by having no competent staff available at weekends which means if the system goes down, as it did last weekend, you can forget about using your money until at least Monday lunchtime! Avoid Avoid Avoid as your main bank account!

Alliance and Leicester is a growing a very successful bank, with a lot of help from the banking group santander. I have only had an A+L account for over 3 months and find it one of the best banks I've been with. I have split the review inot sections which I beleive is important for a bank to be successful and reted them /10 along with a ... Read the complete review

I currently have a joint current account and two joint savings accounts with Alliance and Leicester and I am fairly pleased with the service I receive from them. We joined this bank when we were looking around for a joint account, as we were moving in together. We chose the Premier Direct Current Account due to the overdraft facility ... Alliance and liecester is a fraud... i have been charged £250 so far for going £0.85 overdrawn. this bank should be scrapped!!! they dont even have real people you can talk to @ their few branches in london. you have to talk over the phone as their current, premium and savings accounts are run over the phone. my advice for anyone looking to open an account is that this bank should not be on your list of options. try loyds bank or hsbc ..or better off my own bank.... barclays.

This bank takes 1 day for inter-account online transfers between my own A&L accounts. And if I send money to my bank accounts at other banks or to someone else, it takes upto 3 days. This is such a big pain...
Compared to this, money transfers at every other bank I know of, are done instantly, within seconds. I don't know whether this is deliberate or other wise, but I do know that I am closing my A&L accounts soon. 6% on first £2500 is not enough to compensate for this discomfort.
There are other minor flaws, but overall other features seemed fine.

I was happy with Alliance and Leicester at first, having got £100 for switching accounts with them and £25 for recommending a friend to current accounts that were giving us a good rate of interest. However, after missing a couple of outgoing payments, I was taken into a spiral of debt. They'd already told me I couldn't have an ... Read the complete review

I told them to close my account in March and they told me they couldn't until they had applied the overdrawn charges to it even after I credited my account - the money was already there to clear it. I called again for a total of 5 months and each time they said it would be actioned. I called again on the 13th of August and was told these would be ... Read the complete review

I used the recent transfer offer whereby if you switched from another bank they gave you £100. This i loved and i can confirm that they did indeed give me £100 after the 4 month period! The switching process was suprisingley simple and the call centre i spoke to was knowledgeable and explained the terms and conditions fully (the call was cheap ... Read the complete review

Allience and Leister - when I was aranging my account with them (Premier 21 current account), the great rate I was offered was 10%, obviously this was brilliant. The staff at the bank were helpful and at the time I thought well informed, I had taken my father along as he works for Barclays but could not find a rate close to what I was promised but ... We recently opened an Alliance & Leicester Premier current account. We opted for a transfer service from our existing bank to Alliance and Leicester, and so far its been very successful. The online application was simple to complete, and within 6 hours we had an email confirming the account was approved. The account has no monthly fee and ... Read the complete review

Santander/Alliance & Leicester are the most incompetent and obstructive organization I have ever encountered. They are incapable of handling simple processes like change of address, share sales, or transfers between accounts without making a series of basic errors. I am absolutely disgusted with Alliance & Leicester. We were fed up with the astronomical overdraft charges of HSBC and were enticed by the £100 incentive to open a a and l account - BIGGEST MISTAKE EVER!!!! The DD switch over is supposed to be pain free - WHATEVER!!!! We have had soooo many DD's recall - at a charge of £25 each time - even ... Read the complete review

I joined Alliance & Leicester having tired of 0.1% interest from Lloyds bank. I did receive £100 to join but of course one always needs look past such fat carrots. I was particularly attracted to the online banking aspect and I must say that this is a smooth online bank and would recommend it to people who really don't need to speak to people ... Alliance & Leicester provide incentives (currently £100 cashback for switching an account to them, plus more cashback for introducing a friend) to new customers, but the overall package is terrible.
The customer service at the branches is non-existent, and their telephone service and the online banking system are also quite poor.
I do not recommend Alliance & Leicester.

I signed up for an Alliance and Leicester account last year, tempted by their interest free overdraft and brilliant switching service - meant to make transfering all your direct debits and standing orders easy and pain free! What a joke!! When I filled out the forms with my dd's and so's, I had to put the dates I wanted the payments to come ... Read the complete review

Alliance and Leicester are funny ones. I signed up for their current account a couple of years ago because they had a great rate on interest, and there was a £1000 free overdraft...but since that introductory stuff ended, I haven't found them particularly brilliant - especially since I went to apply for a credit card with them, and then the woman ... A&L must be the most backward bank in the country, further more they have lied to me on two occasions. I have never had anything but positive encounters with Alliance and Leicester. I signed up for it through a cashback offer of £50 on topcashback and found the whole sign up process pretty easy.
