This is petty compared to some of the complaints below, but still infuriating and completely unnecessary, as well as providing another example of how poor and unsympathetic their customer service is. I moved to A&L from first direct recently, tempted by the much better current account interest rate and a couple of other perks. In ... Read the complete review

Alliance and Leicester customer service is a nightmare. They ignored my letters and printed an erroneous phone number on the one response I received. I closed my account and the balance was not transfered as requested and has now gone missing. I walked to the nearest branch (1.5 hour round trip) with my passport and account ... My first and only experience with this bank is with an ongoing mortgage application. All was going smoothly until I discovered the homebuyers report I ordered along with the mortgage was being performed by a wholly owned subsiduary of the Estate Agent (they claimed no conflict of interest, but I question how that is possible). I called as soon as ... Read the complete review

total shambles. Had to take time off work to get ID checks done at branch before I could open an account. After a week of phone calls with nobody returning my calls they have lost all my details!. Copies of passport, mortgage, business and current account statements, gas and electricity bills... in all everything anyone would need to clone my ... Read the complete review

I would say I have a love-hate relationship with this bank, having been with them for more years than I care to remember. (I was with Leicester Building Society before the amalgamation.) My main complaint is that I don't feel loyal, long-standing customers are given the appreciation I think they deserve. I am not a huge earner, and have ... Read the complete review

Alliance & Leicester have fleeced £520 from my account in one month. The worst was that their charges meant some Direct Debits couldn't go through which in turn generated more bank charges which meant I went overdrawn and yet more bank charges. All because my salary date was moved while I was travelling (and couldn't get hold of them). In the ... Read the complete review

WARNING!! Alliance & Leicester will ruin your credit file! My direct debit was refused as the money for my loan was not in my account (My fault. I did not transfer it). However, I called them and paid with a debit card 2 days later. They accepted payment and everything was fine... ...until I saw my credit file ... Read the complete review

I banked with Girobank when I left school - very convenient and it suited me, never had any problems. Girobank were originally owned by the Post Office Corporation, but were bought by Alliance & Leicester in the late 1980s. My account went along with the buy-out, and I have stayed with them since. I left my old bank in November tempted by the A&L interest free overdraft for a year. BIG MISTAKE! If you are considering opening an account or switching please read this first as I am not exagerating, I need to warn people before they go to the hassle of switching. The A&L online banking does NOT give a true available balance and ... Read the complete review

I changed from First Direct to Alliance and Leicester Premier Plus Account in November. I was tempted by the 5% on any credit balances up to £2500. First Direct pays you 2% on credit balances unless you fall below £1000 at any point in the month then it drops to a terrible low of 0.1%. I was also impressed by the free travel insurance ... I've been waiting to tell people about A&L, and how bad they are for ages. As a person who has always managed there finances pretty carefully (tight!! I admit it) I was horrified to find that I was being charged £25 for an oversight in the banking system those of Direct Debits (horible concepts). I had a direct debit going out ... Background I travel a lot and was sick of paying over £110 per year for travel insurance, so was very pleased to hear that A&L were offering free travel insurance if you agreed to pay in £500 per month, hence I ran down to the nearest branch and opened a Premier Current Account Perks *Free travel insurance which in may ... After all the glowing reviews, I thought it a good idea to get my complaint about A&L off my chest in public as they strike me as a peculiarly unfriendly bank. The background to the story is: 8 years trouble-free banking with Abbey National, decided to move to A&L because of low overdraft rate and good in-credit interest rate. ... Read the complete review

THE U18 CASHCARD ACCOUNT FROM THE ALLIANCE & LEICESTER Well if you are under 18, or your off-spring is, then you will be in the same position as me. Living far from branches of any banks it is difficult to obtain and pay in money and most banks don?t issue accounts to Under 18s. My son is 16 and has amounted quite a bit ... We have banked with Alliance and Leicester since they took over National Girobank I don't know how many years ago! Before then, we banked with Girobank purely for the convenience. Hubby works for Royal Mail, and Girobank then belonged under the blanket of the Post Office. Little by little, the Post Office as such has been eroded. ... Read the complete review

I opened my alliance and leicester cashcard account for under 18s 7 months ago. The account opening process was very straightforward and easy to understand even for a first bank account. I was attracted by the healthy tiered rates of interest upto 3.75% gross per year. When I turned 16 they sent a letter congratulating me and giving me ... Read the complete review

I have held an Alliance Account for about six years. They provide an internet and telephone banking service, and are very easy to use. They offer you an overdraft of up to half your salary with no monthly fee, and a very low interest rate. My experience of the A&L was not a good one, when I decided to move and get a new mortgage, I shopped around. The A&L deal wasn't the best, but they told me I would get shares worth £1000 if I stuck with them. So my old mortgage was stopped and the new one started the same day . All was well until A&L informed me I was not to get any shares as my ... Read the complete review
