Pre Approval? Yeah right!! (Barclays Bank)

I have been banking with Barclays for the past 15 years and have always had a good relationship with them, and ran my account very well. I was in the process of applying for a mortgage and, having had no credit, was finding it difficult to increase my credit score. I went to Barclays and asked them for advice. They looked into my account and stated, unequivocally that I was pre-approved for a Platinum credit card, which I applied for there and then. I was informed that I would recieve my card within 7-10 days. I waited, and then some more. At day 12 I returned and enquired about it, and was told I had been refused, for whatever reason, and would be informed in writing within 5 days. That was in March 09. I never did recieve anything in writing explaining anything,and the staff weren't able to shed light on what had happened. I went to Barclays in an effort to find out why this had occured, and they had no response for me, apart from giving me a number to call to request a futher letter. I called this number but still, 2 weeks later, have received nothing. I feel that people ought to be aware of how some of these multi national companies treat people, and so be wary of them. This is not the only problem I have had with Barclays, as I arranged my mortgage through them, not without similar pitfalls whereby I was given conflicting information from their head office as opposed to what i was told at the branch, face to face. At this moment in time, due to my low credit score, I have had to get my mortgage with them, but would not generally recommend them as you are passed from pillar to post, given conflicting information, and never know where you stand.

Summary: If they say you've got a pre-approved limit, don't believe in this wholly
