Advantages: Good rates
Disadvantages: Every dealing with them reminds me of the scene in Mary Poppins where people hammer on the bank door
I joined Barclays in March this year so that I could take advantage of their excellent regular saver rate of 6%. Applying for the savers had to be done in branch, however staff were very friendly and did not push other products onto us, although we did have to wait over an hour to speak to someone.
Once I had my saver set up I expected to recieve some sort of confirmation, or information about the account in the post, but I received nothing. Two months after opening the account, when it had £750 in it, I contacted Barclays by going into a branch and asking for some help. After nearly 3 weeks they traced the account and finally gave me a sort code and an account number.
However my troubles didn't end there. In order to use online banking I was told I had to set up a current account, so I opened a basic one to avoid unnessisary credit checks, but nearly 6 months later I still have not recieved some little gadget that allows me to validate myself and move money about online.
Overall I think Barclays have had great rates, but the customer service has been appauling, and I still can't access my money. For this reason I wouldn't reccomend them to anyone, unless you were after a good rate product to lock your money away for a few years.
Summary: Would avoid as much as possible

- 13/11/09 I set up a regular saver also but didn't bother with the current account - I've kept my own records of how much is there, so come the year end hopefully I won't have any trouble withdrawing it! |

- 04/11/09 Take your money out and put it elsewhere. Try Abbey (Santander) they are excellent. I've been with them for nearly 20 years now and have never had any trouble. |

- 04/11/09 I've just spent over a hour in there with a similar issue... they just seemed to want to sell to me! |
