My recent banking nightmare!

I had every intention of sitting here and writing a scathing review regarding Barclays due to recent events, but when i've thought about it objectively, i've banked with them for nearly 30 years and this is the first real problem I have had with them, so that would be particularly unfair although to me, it is a BIG problem. The branch staff have always been knowledgable, professional and polite, and online banking has been a godsend for me working shifts so, up until now, I have had very little to complain about!
The current saga is due to a discrepancy between my statement balance and my 'cleared balance' of nearly £600 which means I am over my small overdraft limit and have started having direct debits returned. I appretiate that mistakes can happen but what I take issue with is the blase attitude of customer services and the feeling that noone is willing to take responsibility.
To cut a very long story short - Nearly £600 is maked as having left my account and is 'pending' reaching 5 seperate companies for the exact amounts of bills I had paid via online banking last Wedsnesday. So for example, my electricity payment was £33.50 which the electricity company have taken, but there is another £33.50 pending but Barclays can not tell who is trying to take it - repeat for another 4 companies completely independent from each other. I can understand a single company trying to take the money twice but 5... all on the same day?!?! I don't think so!! The big problem I have is that Barclays are absolutely refusing to believe that the error is on their part and are insistent that I have to wait 10 working days for a) the money to return to my account or b) for the companies taking the money to appear on my statement and I then can file a fraud complaint. In the meantime I will be charged for unpaid direct debits and I am broke!!
I hate to make this sound like a racial issue but very early this morning I was through to an advisor in a foreign call centre and had extreme difficulty trying to make myself understood which certainly did help with my frustration and I am exasperated at their failure to realise that some people really do account for every penny they earn/spend and to me, £600 is ALOT of money that I just cannot afford to 'write off' for 10 days whilst I potentially get into debt trying to honour other finanical commitments!
Not good Barclays!! I have banked with you for a long time - a little empathy would have been very much appretiated!
Summary: Not a happy customer!
