I banked with Barclays for 16 years. In the last 3 years of that time I was overdrawn and paying increasingly high bank charges.

At the time I had a large loan and an overdraft.

An interesting part of all this was that they kept changing the rules.... they said I could no longer have the overdraft and would have to increase my mortgage to pay it off... I refused to do this as I knew I could pay off the overdraft within 5 months once the loan payments were complete and I only had 2 months left to go on the loan. I feel this was such bad advice ..... to try to encourage me to pay off an overdraft over 23 years instead of within a year is to me unforgiveable.

Through all this I spoke to numerous people who all told a different tale..... it appeared that even the employees did not really know what they were doing so there was little chance for the customer!! I hasten to add that this was not my choice ... ideally I would have prefered to speak to one person and know where I was up too!!

The final straw for me was that they refused to let me pay a vets bill even though I have insurance and only had to wait for pet plan to send me the cheque.. it usually takes 10 - 14 days to arrive.

This finished it for me and I changed banks.......

I have not been overdrawn since and funnily enough.. although my salary did not increase I was never short of money. This showed me that whilst I had been overdrawn and that was no one's fault other than my own, Barclays had made a killing by fleecing me of any money I may have had to repay the overdraft!!


The moral of this story is do not bank with Barclays unless you are always going to stay in credit.
