I discovered, quite by accident, a ruse which helps you get your new current account off to a flying start with a gift of £15 from First Direct.

I applied in the usual way, and then was confronted with the usual request for documentation (thank you, Mrs Thatcher, for passing such strict anti-money laundering legislation). I was not keen on sending away my passport through the post for ID, as I was planning a trip abroad.

I ignored the application letter from First Direct, and I ignored the follow-up reminder. Hey prest, I then got a final reminder offering me a £15 credit if I would reconsider my refusal to open an account!
