First Direct is the best bank I've ever used giving exceptional customer service. I've been with First Direct for a few years now and I can't say a bad word against them. I'm not easy to please generally but I've even called them to thank them for excellent service which I never do! They are innovative and extremely professional. They were one of the first banks to provide telephone and internet banking services. You can do most things on the internet and they seem to adequately staff the phones so you never have to wait very long to get through if you need to talk to someone 24/7. They don't have the overheads of owning branches, but any HSBC branch will serve you as First Direct is a division of HSBC. One example of good customer service. I accidentally made a payment to a credit card instead of the first direct one, thereby incurring a late payment charge. I simply phoned them and explained and it was waived immediately - no questions. The free mobile phone text messages are great too. You can get free text message notification when your account is debited or credited and set all sorts of conditions - very handy! I can't comment on their interest rates etc, but if customer service is a priority, then you can't go wrong with First Direct.
