Advantages: Free phone insurance
Disadvantages: Very high account & service charges
I've been with the Halifax for approximately 5 years now and I'm afraid my experiences with them have been horrendous. I previously had a basic current account and a second account with an overdraft facility. A couple of years ago while I was out of work, I received a letter from the Halifax stating that I would have start paying a fixed daily fee for the overdraft (which if I recall correctly was £1 per day). I visited my branch and explained that I'd been laid off and was not in a position to pay the overdraft off. I asked if some sort of mechanism could be used to pay off the overdraft and avoid paying £30 a month in interest as this would equate to an APR of 365%, which for an arranged overdraft is a lot. I was told that my only option was to upgrade my account to one which had a fixed monthly fee for the overdraft (£15 per month). The only upside of this was the fact that I was given free phone insurance and free travel insurance. In between times they have tried to charge me £5 per day for being over drawn by less than 10 pence, which admittedly the branch manager said she would cancel. Unfortunately this didn't happen, so at the end of the following month the money was debited from my account which took me back into another unauthorised overdraft, starting the entire cycle again. I quickly visited my branch again and after being told that the absent manager was the only person who could rectify the situation, I was put on the phone to the customer service department who advised me that the staff "were lying" and that they could sort out the problem if they wanted. After 3 visits and a missed job interview (the manager was very selective about when she would meet with me to sort it out) I finally got the charges cancelled.
The only positive I could really add is that the new account provides free phone and travel insurance and the staff were very personable, however as soon as I get another job the overdraft is getting paid and I'm going elsewhere.
Summary: The pro's are outweighed by the cons.
