Advantages: It's fast, there's no messing around waiting for security codes by post

Disadvantages: It took so long for HSBC to set up online banking

HSBC might have taken a while to get it set up, but it was certainly worth the wait. I’ve been with HSBC (or Midland at the time) since I started at University, and they have always been really helpful when it comes to advice, or the dreaded overdraft situation. The online banking was equally as impressive.

It helps considerably if you are already registered with the telephone banking system, as you can just enter your telephone pass code, and your account number etc… and they give you a “Banking number” to use in future, and even send you confirmation, and a copy of your number in the post. As soon as you have entered your telephone pass code, you’re basically *in*. Straight away you can have access to the balances on your accounts, even on your credit card, and arrange to pay bills, and transfer money etc from other HSBC accounts.

We might have had to wait a while for the privilege, but that time was obviously well spent, as the site is clear, secure, and fast to use, and you can use it immediately (providing you have your telephone banking details to hand, otherwise, just pop in to a branch, or ring them up to arrange for a banking number in order to use the service).

It is a lot faster than say Natwest online, which I think is ridiculous – having to wait 8 days for your security number to come in the post before you can use the service, and having to fill a big form in online. With HSBC, there was no form, no hassle, straight in, and able to view my details immediately – and as it should be – after all *I* am the customer here, it’s *my* money.

Highly recommended, fast service, easy to use, more convenient if you are already registered for telephone banking.

I hear what you say about Nat West online. I am with Nat West but I don't use their online banking I prefer to brow beat them in person to get them to do ehat I want.

But their association with Yahoo.co.uk allows me to take a look at a mini-statement using the Yahoo Finance pages of My Yahoo that I find a boon when I want to find out exactly when a direct debit went out or a BACS credit arrived in my account.
