Advantages: Good online banking
Disadvantages: Poor customer service
I've had my account with HSBC for over ten years. In fact, when I opened my account they were called Midland Bank. So I do have quite a bit of experience of their services.
HSBC's internet banking service is fairly reliable, I have only been unable to log in to my account a handful of times since I started using the service about 3 or 4 years ago. Its very easy to use and, unlike some other banks, I am able to transfer money from my current account to my savings account (and vice-versa) instantly. Good so far.
The telephone banking, however, is not so good. Their call centre is clearly not based in the UK and many of the operators I have dealt with have a very poor grasp of the english language. I have often found it difficult to achieve what I have intended and have even resorted to physically going into a branch to get things done.
This leads me to the level of service offered in branch. While most of the staff I have had dealings with in the various branches I have visited have been friendly and helpful, the staffing levels have been inadequate. This has resulted in rather large queues forming and some very disgruntled customers. The front desk usually only has one member of staff where at least two would be optimum. I also find that the actual tellers are never running at full capacity, where four or five windows are available only two or three are in use. Not great customer service at all.
Summary: Not a bad place to leave your money.
