Advantages: Competent, sound backing.
Disadvantages: Unremarkable, poor student accounts.
I joined Lloyds back when that's all they were, before the TSB merger, in about 1997. My first account was a student one, which was perhaps a bit misleading as the account was basically a standard one with a few CD vouchers thrown in as an "incentive". Foolishly I didn't check out the competition in much depth - had I made the effort, and in hindsight, I would have gone somewhere else. 3 years later, and I'm now with the Bank of Scotland, mainly because I wasn't so impressed with Lloyds student accounts. Their upgrade from my old student account to the new graduates account is summarily unimpressive, especially in comparison to some of the deals you can get elsewhere. The whole thing struck me as... apathetic, as if they weren't really bothered about me so long as I put my loan in there every few months. They seem to be aiming more at higher-end customers these days, which isn't my kind of market. Also the packages they offered me were poor, not very well thought-out and seemed sloppy. Nobody showed much of an interest in me which is perhaps a bit silly considering I'll soon be a graduate earning the serious money they want in their accounts. In-store service is OK, pretty much the same as every other bank I've ever been to. You go in, there's the customer service desks (staffed by some nice ladies in the Blackburn branch ;)), the lego desk for (big) kids, and the over-the-counter services. All very standard, and uninspired. The interest rates are also around standard, nothing special. While I was with them the service and everything was OK, but at no time did it leap out and grab you as anything special. Maybe that's not what you want from a bank, but I'd hope for more. V. Poor 3/10. ;)
