Disadvantages: didnt upgrade my account (yet a different bank was able to)
I have been a customer with Nationwide for roughly 7 years now. For most of this time I have rarely had a need to contact my bank at all.
I was at school and then at university and so only had a small amount of money and only used my account to withdraw money and for my employees to pay into it. So for those 7 years I had no real opinion of Nationwide, just that it was adequate for my needs.
However, because I am going traveling soon I realized that I needed more from my bank account. This was because I had a Cashbuilder account.
Basically with a Cashbuilder account you can't do anything at all! You have a link card and can only really pay money in and withdraw cash at a cash machine.
So I realized that I would need a current account (a visa card) so that I would be able to pay for items at shops when I am abroad.
I searched all of the big UK banks for the extra fees that they charge for withdrawing cash abroad. Nationwide was by far the cheapest (only charging an extra 1% for foreign withdrawals). I thought this was great and I was therefore planning to continue banking with nationwide.
However, when I went into nationwide to look to upgrade my account to a current account I was informed that it wasn't possible, due to my credit rating (which isn't bad - I just don't have one)! I was told that I was only allowed a cash card.
I thought I would attempt to get a current account with another bank, so I got on the phone to natwest (I didn't have my hopes up). You would think that if a bank you have been with for 7 years cannot give you a bank account, that one you have spent 10 minutes to on the phone would definitely not be able to give you one!
Well apparently not, Natwest gave me a current account straight the way. Although the account had no lending facilities with it, it had the all important visa card and the ability to pay for items at shops (which I desperately needed).
Another thing that I have recently learnt about Nationwide is that you cannot transfer money over the phone (only over the internet). This I find strange, especially considering that other banks have this facility (i.e natwest).
Nationwide rant over.
Even though i am annoyed at nationwide, to be fair on the bank they do have really helpful and polite staff in branch (not so much on the phone).
Summary: they dont value loyalty
