Advantages: place to keep your money

Disadvantages: expensive monthly fee, bad customer service, helps themselves to money when they want

I have banked with Natwest since I was about 11 (so a good 13 years now) and to be perfectly honest, I think the only reason I've stuck with them is because I have a bad credit rating but they will help me out if I twist their arm as they know my history because I've been with them so long. I originally joined Natwest as they were the only bank that gave out a debit card to young people (so teenagers in other words!) which was a novelty when I was young. I enjoyed paying for things with a solo card just like an adult.

As the years went on, my account was upgraded due to me earning more money and I was given a cheque book. this was an upgrade to the Advantage Gold account which you pay £12.95 a month for and you get 'benefits' included. I have to say in the 6 years ive been paying this fee, ive never been able to take advantage of these so called 'benefits'. so to me this is a complete waste of money each month!

I have always behaved myself as far as my bank goes and have received one or two, if any at all, bank charges. At the age of 18, Natwest sold me a personal loan and a small overdraft.

Looking back I think I was far too young to be offered £12,000 to do what I pleased with, after all, Natwest was just after the interest! They have refinanced me twice but the 3rd time; they racked their interest rates to 17.9% knowing I couldn't go anywhere else. I think this is taking advantage of my status and it pains me to know they had me in the palm of their hands. I have since gone elsewhere after having far too many issues with direct debits and Natwest. I have lost all trust and faith in them now and have moved banks. They help themselves to money in my account without asking and their customer service is appalling! Everytime I've complained they tangent off the original complaint and turn it round to be the customers fault. I have had to go to the financial ombudsman many times after going round in circles with Natwest.

If you're just looking for a bank to look after your money, then Natwest is fine for you. Any other services and be aware they will always help themselves to your hard earned cash when they feel like it!

Summary: good for just a basic account, no good for products or services

I'd ask to downgrade that "Advantage Gold" account immediately if you don't use the benefits. Why pay for banking?
