Advantages: Good customer services

Disadvantages: not in every town.

I opened a business acount with Natwest - about six months ago - I was not happy with the service I had been getting at Lloyds and had heard good things about Natwest. What finally made me decide to open a Natwest account was that while they offer the usual 12 months of free banking that most banks offer to small businesses, they also offer and extra six months for free if you take a free two and a half day course at the Business Link - which was no great hardship.

As I was not borrowing money, I did not need to present them with a business plan. (If you want to borrow money, a business plan is vital.)The free course they encourage you to do will teach you how to put together a business plan, which can make a lot of difference to your chances of getting a loan. The Business Link are an arm of the hamber of Commerce, so there will probably be one near you - your council should be able to get in touch and you can get onto their free course regardless of whether you have a Natwest account

From my first visit to the bank onwards, I have found the staff helpful and well informed. I was setting up a company to trade online ad new absolutly nothing about online cash handline. I approached them with this problem and although no one at the branch had dealt with an internet company before, they were very quick in finding me the information I needed. Thier help and support was invaluable and I don't know how I would have got going without them. Not only did they sort out a business bank account for me, but they helped me to find a reputable online cash handler.

Natwest offers a range of very appealing features for startup businesses: Their online banking service is very good, allowing you to monitor direct debits, make payments and the such. Also once you get into being charged, they don't currently charge for any money you move around online. (A real benefit if you have a small company and need to avoid every cost that you can.)
Thei
r interest rates are much like everyone elses - I have not borrorwed money and so have little experience of this.

While the standards of customer services can vary a great deal from town to town with any bank, my experience of Natwest in the high street, online and by telephone is that they are helpful, friendly and considerate. I have had various questions and problems (of my own making) and they have been very helpful.

I notice that a hot drinks machine has been installed in my local branch, and that every care is taken to look after me when I drop in.

So far their paper work has been totally comprehensible, as has their advice, their online banking site is always up, and is so easy to use that the least internet-wise person could get the hang of it.

If you are looking for a bank that will treat you like a person even if you do happen to be a business, and offer you a good range of services, Natwest are well worth a visit.
