Advantages: Secure, easy to use
Disadvantages: Validifying accounts is a hassle and time consuming, fees are high
There is little to add I'm sure about Paypal that has not already been written but I want to say my two pence worth, so I am going to.
Paypal is a secure online payment mechanism run by eBay. You can use it to make secure payments for items over the internet without having to give you're ban or card details to someone you do not know. You can either keep a Paypal balance from any incoming funds (such as through eBay sales) or pay for things using a credit card or bank details.
I have mostly found this service to be very useful. The site itself is wonderfully laid out and simple to use. You can view all previous transactions, find addresses for sending items to people and change details. I do however have a few grumbles.
Paypal fees are extortionate. I know they need to make money but their percentage of revenue is huge (I believe 10% at last count). If you are selling through eBay, you get hit with their ludicrously inflated fees and then with Paypals too.
Validifying your account can take a long time. I had to pay for an item recently but realised that the credit card details I had listed were out of date. It took me a very embarassing 5 days to get new details validated even though I've been using it for 5 years. I don't see why this needed to take so long and be such a hassle.
They are my grumbles. Otherwise, it works very well and although i have never had a problem with fraud I feel safe and secure with them.
Summary: A good means to securely pay online
