Advantages: Free Currency Conversion, Safer Transactions, No need to give reciever of payment your detaisl.

Disadvantages: None that I can think of

Paypal makes your money transaction online safer and gives you more confidence.
I myself have been with paypal for little over 6 months and at first was a little hesitant about putting my personal details on there. Though ever since I've joined paypal, I have been able to make money off the internet, make much safer payment trasnactions nad feel more safe when using the internet to buy things. One of the main uses for paypal these days is use with buying items on ebay from other people. When you buy an item off a real person you don't really want to go handing out your credit card numbers to them as you don't know hat they would do with it. With paypal, you can send money by your credit card to the person without having to review any personal details. It can also be alot faster than any other method due to that ebay have an internal paypal payment system. If you are wanting to buy stuff off ebay you are really going to need paypal. Nearlly the whole community of ebayers use it to make safe trasnaction so you are going to need one to.
Another nice feature that Paypal have is that you can withdraw your ebay balance into your bank account. This is useful if your a person like me who makes a bit of extra cash on the intenret and companies that pay by paypal. It's much faster than recieving cheque through the post. Also if your recieving money from a country with international currency, sometimes your bank charges you for the conversion. Paypal do currency conversions for free so there is no hassel sorting out currencies with your bank.

Summary: If you spend, recieve money over the internet... this is the only tool that you are gonig to need.

You don't have to paypal. It's recommend you do so that the buyer can have protection against fraud. If your a seller you also have alternatives such as cheque payment or handing money up-front. So paypal is not exactly needed but its a good way to transfer money safely.

Ebay and paypal are owned by the same people - which is why to be a seller on ebay you now HAVE to have paypal. Don't get me wrong, I DO like paypal, but I don't think it's right that they force themselves on people like that.
