5th September 2002 was a sad day for customers of Zurich Bank. An anonuncement was placed on the wesite at zurich.co.uk that the excellent current account (you know the one, with the pigs flying in the advert) was closed to new applicants and would be closed to existing customers as soon as next April. In other words, find a new bank guys because we can't run ours properly! Although not written, it seems the impressive guarantee to pay just 0.5% below Bank Of England base rate is what sunk them. Having been with Barclays for several years, I finally got fed up with them paying me £1 (and normally less) of interest each year plus a series of mistakes they had made. So I thought I'd give Zurich a try. It was the interest rate guarantee that really attracted me (0.5% under base rate), although I am looking forward to the case of wine that should arrive any day soon. Well I'm most of the way through the transfer process, and so far so good. The website isn't elaborate but it does everything you'd expect it to. The staff on the phone have been excellent.
