I have always held the opinion that a proper barbeque must start with the ritual of stoking up. I have always experienced a great feeling of satisfaction as I manipulate the fire evenly around the charcoal and bring the embers to the optimum condition for cooking, at just the right moment when the guests have arrived, introductions are over and the drinks have been served.
Unfortunately this seldom happens. I am most often to be found up to my elbows in black dust,on my knees blowing frantically to get it going and shouting to the wife to hold back on the new potatoes.
I have found the answer. A gas barbeque. Why didn't I do this before. It's so easy.
A few days ago we bought a mid/upper range gas barbeque at B&Q and held a party for 20 adults and about 10 children. I was able to stay clean and tidy and welcome the guests as they arrived. I didn't have to concern myself with the barbeque until it was time to start cooking. When we did, it was instantaneous and when I got into full swing the guests were unable to eat as fast as the food could be churned out.
Later in the evening we were able to start again just by flicking a switch. This would not have been possible with a charcoal fire and I have to admit that the food does actually taste the same.
