Advantages: easy,portable,no cleaning
Disadvantages: doesnt always work
We have a "portable" gas barbecue but it just seems such an ordeal to take anywhere, clean out etc that we still find ourselves using these if we want to cook away from home. They are so cheap, and once you have eaten you don't have to worry about gas bottles exploding in the hot car (or maybe that's just me).
We bought the Bar-Be-Quick Pack of 5 Instant Disposable BBQ's (item 345/0664) for £9.79 so under £2 each. Each one consists of an aluminium tray containing coals and a firelighter impregnated sheet covered by a steel cooking grill in a cardboard outer box. The box states it takes 20 minutes to heat up, which is a fair assessment.
Grill size is (W)25.5, (D)32.5cm and it is surprising exactly how much you can fit on to cook in that space especially as it stays hot for a couple of hours once lit. I like the criss cross style of the metal grill because unlike traditional barbecue grills there are no gaps between the bars to lose small pieces of food down.
I would advise you to either purchase a metal wire stand which we have done or nominate a couple of house bricks for the use as it needs to be used on a flat level fireproof surface. We find the stand easier as its not always practical to carry bricks on a day out!
We found that the portable stand we bought was too big for this barbecue so we had to do a little "modifying" for it to work.
Another tip is to make sure you give the thing a good shake before lighting to distribute the coals evenly as we have sometimes found some of the coals have remained unlit after we had finished.
"Lights with a single match" is also not always to be relied upon either. We have had a couple in the past not light at all, but maybe we should give them the benefit of the doubt and blame a damp garage - but if your going out remember to take two along just in case.
Apart from that, just sit back enjoy and remember that you wont have to scrub any greasy gunk out in the morning which for me is a huge plus point.
Summary: Great to use out and about.

I actually find disposables more environmentally friendly. I dispose of the old charcoal in my garden whenever I've taken one to the beach for example or in my back garden plus the metal trays are ideal for carrying rubbish to the bins. |
