Revolution Fish Grill
Advantages: Well made and simple to use.
Disadvantages: Can only cook one fish at a time.
I love to cook fish on a BBQ, especially something like a whole trout. But, cooking fish on a BBQ can be very difficult and tricky. You go to turn it over and the skin sticks to the grill, causing it to break apart as you try to cook and turn it. So you have to be especially careful when trying to cook it through. But then I came across this Revolution Fish Grill for £6.50 in a local DIY store, and thought that it could prove top be a useful addition to my BBQ tools.
The grill itself is made up of 2 chrome plated metal wire grill plates that are hinged at one end, with handles out of the other end. The main plate has the longer of the 2 handles and finishes with a plastic moulded safe grip handle on the end. As you close the plates together, the other plate with the shorter handle closes so that the 2 handles come together. You then have a metal ring which slides over the 2 handles to keep them closed during the cooking process.
The idea in use is to place your fish between the 2 grill plates, which are slightly concave to accommodate the fish, and close the handles together and lock them in position using the ring provided. You can then place the whole lot on the BBQ to cook. The beauty of it is that you can easily turn the whole fish over (by just turning the grill) to ensure even cooking throughout. The handle is long enough to allow you to keep a sufficient distance away from the heat to stop you burning yourself, and once cooked through, you simply open up the grills and serve your fish. To clean, you can just put the whole grill in to the dishwasher, which is a lot simpler than trying to put your BBQ grill in to the wash.
Of note, you are not merely confined to just cooking whole fish with this grill. Through experimentation, I have also managed to cook chicken pieces with this, and other cuts of fish. It seems to work well with whatever you put into it because it holds everything together during the cooking process and stops it sticking to the main BBQ grill and falling apart.
Negative points? The main issue I find is that this Fish Grill appears to be more suited to the smaller varieties of fish. If you try and do a whole trout, and it is a larger trout, you may struggle to get it all in between the grills. OK, you can just cut the head and tail off and just cook the body, but sometimes it looks nicer to serve the whole thing, with the head and tail, on a plate when cooked. You can also do cuts of fish in this grill, but again, you have to aim for the smaller sizes if you want to fit them in.
Another issue is that unless you are BBQ'ing for one, you will often find that you may need to use 2 of these grills together. OK, more of a matter of personal preference, but often, if we decide to have trout on the BBQ, the wife and I will have one fish each. But with this grill, you can only do one at a time on the BBQ. So someone has theirs cooked first, whilst the other person waits, which isn't always convenient. You could buy 2 separate grills, but that increases the cost. Perhaps a much better idea would be to have a twin fish grill so that you could cook 2 together in one go, but as yet, I've still yet to find anything like that.
In summary, this is a very good idea for anyone wanting to cook a whole fish on a BBQ because it allows you to hold everything together, and be able to easily turn it over during the cooking process. With a bit of imagination, you can also cook other items in this, such as chicken pieces, demonstrating the versatility of this grill. But the space provided between the grills is rather small, restricting in some way the size of what you can cook. Hence, balancing everything up, I consider that this Revolution Fish grill justifies a 4 star recommendation.
Summary: Great idea for BBQ fish and keeping everything together.
