Sainsbury's Party Disposable BBQ
Advantages: Cheap! Easy to use! Easy to get hold of from store!
Disadvantages: Don't stay that hot much past 45 mins, but its just enough time to cook a choice of 2 foods
Love love love BBQ's! We are very fortunate to have 2 stand up barbies, but not so fortunate that they are stuck at the back of our garage following our last move. Must sort that garage out!
**Wey Hey for instant BBQ's!**
If you are looking to cook a family feast upon the Sainsbury's instant BBQ, you'll need more than one, that's for sure. Priced at £2.99, one is big enough for a meal for 2... just. We are a family of 5 and if we want a spontaneous pretty unplanned Barbie, we tend to go out grab 2.
I would also say these BBQ's are most suited to a choice of one or 2 meats. They simply aren't big enough for a huge choice of foods. We tend to cook burgers for us all on one, and sausages on the other. If we wanted something to add, say kebabs, we'd need another! I'm not sure if they do a bigger version in Sainsburys of these BBQ's as every time I've happened to pop in, they've only had the small ones. In comparison to Tesco and Morrisons instant bbq's though, they are a tiny bit bigger. I guess you could buy more than 2 and create a giant bbq. Personally I'd rather climb over all there is in the garage and dig out one of our stand up's. For me, these instant bbq's are for those instant impulsive decisions for having tea outside on a nice evening. If we had visitors, I'd have my other bbq's set up, purely because you can cook so much more.
**Set up and packaging**
If you have several bricks or a paving slab, I'd advise placing your BBQ upon these as it will give you the flat surface that you need. Don't make the mistake of placing your BBQ upon the grass else it will leave a lovely burnt patch. I'd also advise keeping them well away from where people are seated, as initially, alot of smoke blasts out. Also be aware of children, particularly toddlers running around and keep your BBQ away from anything that could potentially catch fire.
Upon taking the BBQ out of its box, you are presented with a foil tray that holds the coat and starter paper. We put a match or lighter to the starter paper and it generally lights well after a few attempts. Once lit, it burns well with several flames and blasts of smoke. I have to admit, it doesn't smell too great if sat next to, so keep your distance!
You need to wait for the flames to subside after 5-10 minutes before placing any food on the grill, otherwise you'll just end up with charcoaled food thats raw in the middle. I would suggest waiting until the charcoal is turning white and the flames have died down. I would also suggest adding the food all at once, but around the edges, before eventually moving to the middle of the grill.
**What to cook? **
We tend to stick with burgers and sausages, but on occasions have done maybe burgers and kebabs on skewers. I think thinly cut meat is fine for these BBQ's, but I wouldn't bother with thick cuts because the heating time isn't long enough to cook all the way through. It tends to start to die down after 45 minutes, so you need foods that don't take long.
To dispose of safely, I tend to douse mine with water so there isn't a risk of somebody touching it and harming themselves. You can then leave it for a while and dispose of it safely.
Those spontaneous decisions to have a quick Barbie
Taking to the park
Taking camping or to a festival
Taking around to a friend's house if they don't have a BBQ
I think these BBQ's are a fantastic idea - Sainsbury's keep there's well stocked and at £2.99 I feel they are a fair price. We don't tend to shop in Sainsbury's very often, but compared to Tesco, Asda and Morrisons, Sainsburys always seem to have them in when you want them, whereas other stores have always sold out.
Summary: A fabulous lil barbie!
