Weber Compact Charcoal BBQ
Advantages: see review
Disadvantages: see review
Last year I decided in was time to buy something a bit more substantial and began to do a bit of research. It very quickly became apparent that Weber was a brand with an excellent reputation. I always like to see and touch what I am about to buy before making a final decision, so took a trip to my local John Lewis as they stock a wide range of Weber barbecues. I was really impressed with the build quality and specifications of what I saw and decided this was the brand for me! As we often have friends around for a barbecue I decided to buy a large capacity model. However I really couldn't the top of the range models, much as I would have liked to! In the end I settled for a 57 cm Weber compact model. I can't remember exactly how, much I paid at the time, but see that John Lewis is now selling this model for £99.95. It is possible to pay a bit less on line if you shop around. There is also a smaller 47 cm model available in this compact range if you prefer. John Lewis offer excellent customer service and for this reason I was happy to buy from them.
What you get for your money.
The BBQ comes flat packed and weighs 9 Kg. There is a clear instruction booklet include as well as a recipe booklet.
The bowl and lid are a shiny black and made from porcelain enamel on heavy gauge steel. They are guaranteed for 5 years to be both fire and rust proof.
The handles are made from glass reinforced nylon and are also guaranteed for 5 years against cracking. The handles have a heat shield to protect your hands.
There is an alluminium rust proof vent to allow you to control the temperature when cooking and a rust proof ash catcher.
The wheels are all weather crack proof, meaning the barbecue can be left outside in the elements without sustaining damage.
There is a heavy duty, triple plated steel cooking grate. The grate has a 1 year warranty against rust.
There is also a charcoal measuring cup included.
I bought this barbecue last year and it has been used on numerous occasions. Even the great British weather doesn't stop us from eating outside when we have planned to do so! I am really pleased with my purchase and believe it will save me money in the long run. The first thing to say is that it was really easy to put together, or so my husband tells me! The instruction booklet is clearly written with helpful illustrations.
I ma pleased I opted for the larger model as we often have friends around. I have cooked for 8 without any problems using this barbecue. The vent is really effective in allowing you to control the flame and therefore the heat inside; this helps to prevent food form becoming overcooked or burnt. The lid fits on securely, especially useful when it's windy.
My past experience with cheaper models has been that many are not very stable. The Weber model has two wheels and one steel leg and this gives it excellent stability. The wheels are sturdy and show no sign of wear, even though the barbecue was left outside throughout the very cold winter we have just experienced. The wheels run smoothly, making the barbecue easy to move around.
The handles tend to another area where cheaper models have shown their weakness. Again the Weber model scores highly here, with excellent handles that not only feel substantial, but are comfortable to grip too. The handles come with a manufactures 5 year guarantee.
The main cooking bowl and lid feels and looks like a high quality item and I can really tell the difference between this model and cheaper options available. I like the fact the bowl is not only rust proof but also fire proof too. There is no sign of any rust on either the bowl or lid despite not being covered! The bowl is a good deep one and cooking inside it is a real pleasure, well my husband has never complained!
The grate is triple plated and again this makes it feel like it was built to last. It is quite heavy and feels substantial like the other components of this barbecue.
Not only does this barbecue look and feel good, but it produce great results too! The food cooked on this model seems to retain more moisture than with other models. The vent certainly helps but so does the deep bowl and well fitting lid. The bowl seems to allow the flame to die down more quickly and then burn evenly, ensuring that the food is cooked well but not burnt to a cinder! We tend to cook all manner of foods on the barbecue including the usual chicken, burgers and sausages, in addition to corn on the cob, fish, steaks, stuffed peppers and jacket potatoes. The list is endless and the recipe booklet has some great ideas and tips.
If I had to name something negative I guess I would say that it would have been useful to have a storage shelf attached to the barbecue. It would also have been useful to have a hook to hang utensils when not in use. These are minor niggles however.
Overall this is an excellent barbecue and I have no hesitation in highly recommended it to you! If only we could have great weather to go with it!
