We got the Smoky Joe Gold to replace an earlier model. Our old model lasted 9 years before it got crushed (don't ask) and though it had been outside all it's life it still looked great up to the moment it was killed off, with no signs of rust at all. The Gold model looks to have the same finish as our previous model and that was very easy to keep clean with some soapy water. Assembling the grill is easy and quick and this version comes with a carry handle as well as a locking lid which is something i missed on our old model. There is an adjustable vent on the top.
The grill cooks well but having a small cooking surface only suitable for a couple of people if making anything bigger than sausages. Very convienent for camping trips or if you just want to have a cook out somewhere for the day.
The grill does come with a 10 year warranty but i doubt you will need to use it as the grill is as robust as our previous one and i expect it to last many many years.
The Smokey Joe Gold is so small and portable it is ideal for camping and/or feeding a small group of people. I have taken it on several weekend breaks and it is so stylish and reliable you will come to depend on its capabilities.
The grill is fashioned from steel that is covered by a porcelain enamel. This, coupled with its globular shape, to me makes it reminiscent of a sort of futuristic pod. But as well as being easy on the eye it is also very practical. It is equipped with a locking lid, so that when you carry it you can do so securely and without running the risk of the grill falling out. When the grill is not in transport the zinc-plated lid lock will lower to give you access to the grill itself.
The grill is 37cm in diameter, so is of an ample size to cook barbeque food for 2 - 5 people. The instruction manual also doubles as a recipe book, and provides many suggestions for barbeque feasts and successful grilling.
There are four holes in the lid of the grill that act as a vent. This is very useful if you are using the grill in damp conditions and need to slam the lid on quickly. You can keep the contents cooking for 4 - 5 hours without the coals going out, too.
One aspect of the Smokey Joe Gold I did not care for was its 'legs'. While they spread over a reasonable distance to give ample support, it is not suitable for uneven ground. The material from which they are made, too, does not appear as durable as that of the bowl. I would prefer it had the device been set on wheels, but considering it comes equipped with a carry handle, transportation is not too problematic.
This is a nice portable grill that, for around £30, will serve you well for a long time. If you can master the art of the barbeque and do not mind hauling its weight around with you, it is ideal for feeding hungry campers.
